Fifth Bishop of Savannah (1873-1885) ILLIAM HINCKLEY GROSS was bom on June 12, 1837, in Baltimore, Maryland. He made his religious profession as a Redemp- torist at Annapolis on April 4, 1858, and was ordained there on May 21, 1863. On April 27, 1873, Father Gross was consecrated fifth Bishop of Savannah. He presided over the dedication of the Cathedral in May 1876. On February 1, 1885, Pope Leo XIII promoted him to Archbi shop of Oregon City (now Portland in Oregon). Archbishop Gross died in Baltimore, on November 14, 1898. Rt. Rev. Thomas A. Becker, D.D. Sixth Bishop of Savannah (1886-1899) T HOMAS A. BAKER was bom on in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on December 20,'1832. Upon his conver sion to Catholicism in early manhood, his parents forced him to change his name to “Becker.” He was ordained a priest in Rome on July 18, 1859. On August 16, 1868, Father Becker was consecrated first Bishop of Wilmington, Delaware. On March 26, 1886, Pope Leo XIII transferred Bishop Becker from Wilmington to Savannah, as sixth bishop. Bishop Becker died in Washington, Georgia, on July 28, 1899. Rt. Rev. Benjamin J. Keiley, D.D. Seventh Bishop of Savannah (1900-1922) ENJAMIN J. KEILEY was bom in Petersburg, Virginia, on Octo ber 13, 1847. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Wilmington, Delaware, at the North American College in Rome on December 31, 1873. He came to Savannah with Bishop Becker. On June 3, 1900, Father Benjamin J. Keiley was con secrated seventh Bishop of Savan nah. On February 13, 1922, he re signed as Bishop of Savannah and on March 24, 1922, was appointed Titu lar Bishop of Scillium. Bishop Kei ley died in Atlanta on June 17, 1925. The Most Rev. Michael J. Keyes, S.M. D.D. Eighth Bishop of Savannah (1922-1935) ICHAEL JOSEPH KEYES was bom in Dingle, Ireland, on February 28, 1876. He was ordained to the priesthood in the Chapel of Caldwell Hall, Catholic University, Washington, DC, for the Society of Mary, on June 21, 1907. On July 8, 1922, Pope Pius XI appointed Father Keyes eighth Bishop of Savannah. He was consecrated on October 18, 1922. Bishop Keyes resigned as Bishop of Savannah on September 23, 1935 and was appointed Titular Bishop of Areopolis. Bishop Keyes died in Washington, DC, on July 31, 1959.
