Main Altar echoes old High Altar
The 8,000-pound marble Baptismal Font was carved in Carrara, Italy and
shipped to the port of Savannah. The inscription is from John 1:33. It
quotes Saint John the Baptist: “Qui misit me baptizare in aqua, hie est
qui baptizat in Spiritu Sancto” (“He who sent me to baptize in water is
the one who baptizes in the Holy Spirit”) The side panels are identical to
those found on the old high altar. The flooring for the font was made in
Pietrasanta, Italy.

The crucifix, which once
stood next to the pulpit, was
removed for several decades.
It has now been completely
restored and given a perma
nent place on what was once
the altar of Saint Anthony.
The new Main Altar was carved from Carrara marble in Carrara, Italy. The
panels are identical to those of the old high altar and the baptism font.
This addition to the cathedral was donated by the bishop and priests of the
Diocese of Savannah and weighs 9,000 pounds. The inscription reads,
“Beati qui ad cenam agni vocati sunt” (“Happy are those who are called to
[the Lamb’s] supper”), the verse from Revelation 19:9 used as the invita
tion to Communion in the Missal.
The Stations of the Cross are
wood carvings from Bavaria,
framed by American wood
work. Each piece was made by
an individual artist. The sta
tions have been restored to
their original appearance.
