Two programs help couples
in troubled marriages
By Sister Pat Brown, SSMN
A ccording to the media, families are under siege. In Europe, traditional
marriages are becoming optional, even in strongly Catholic countries like
Spain and Italy. Lesbian and gay couples are adopting and raising children.
U.S. dioceses are searching for meaningful programs that address the needs of
the more than four million cohabiting couples that have become a part of our
parishes. Two recent efforts to help families held in the Diocese of Savannah
were a Domestic Violence Workshop and the Retrouvaille marriage retreat
experience.
Domestic Violence Workshop
On January 14 more than 150 people, including children, gathered at Saint
Paul Church in Douglas to reflect on the societal and familial consequences of
violence. These families identified alcohol, drugs, and a lack of communica
tion as important factors of hurt in their communities. After viewing the film,
“Love Shouldn’t Hurt,” based on the American Bishops’ pastoral letter “When
I Cry for Help” (1992), the men and women separated into groups to discuss
their own situations and life experience. The impact of machismo in the
Hispanic culture was raised as an important issue, as was creating a safe and
nurturing culture for their children. This dynamic and introspective workshop
was sponsored by the Office of Family Life and is being made available to
other parish groups. Please call the Office of Family Life at the Catholic
Pastoral Center (912-238-2320) for more information or to schedule a
Domestic Violence Workshop for your parish.
Retrouvaille
Nothing is more challenging than daily living out the marriage vows “for
better or worse” in an authentic and loving way. Originating in Canada,
Retrouvaille means “a rediscovery.” One weekend in January, 15 couples gath
ered in Augusta to make a sincere effort to reacquaint themselves with their
“first loves.” Through stories, moments of private reflection and guided dia
logue, husbands and wives found new ways to be connected with one another
and lines of communication were re-established that had deteriorated over
years of living the married-single lifestyle. Sometimes the greatest hindrance to
growth in the relationship is not one’s spouse, but a lack of good relationship
skills, such as the ability to recognize and convey feelings without blame or
judgment. After such an intense experience, the couples all made a firm com
mitment to return in one week for the six follow-up sessions, demonstrating
their understanding that this weekend was truly a graced moment in their mar
riages. As one participant expressed: “I think high school students should make
this kind of a weekend.” Father P. James Costigan and the Retrouvaille team
members are looking for people in the Savannah area who have experienced a
Retrouvaille retreat weekend and would like to be trained for leadership. If you
would consider sharing your gifts in this dramatic way, please contact Father
Costigan at Saint Mary’s in Augusta, at 706-733-6627.
