Bishops praise arrest of suspect
IN ABORTIONIST KILLING
Washington (CNS)
A spokeswoman for the U.S. bishops lauded the
arrest of a man wanted for the 1998 murder of
a Buffalo abortion doctor and said the church “un
equivocally” condemns the use of violence in op
posing abortion. James Kopp, 46, was arrested
March 29 by French police in cooperation with the
FBI. Kopp is suspected by U.S. authorities in the
killing of Dr. Barnett Slepian in his Buffalo home.
Slepian performed abortions at Buffalo’s GYN Wo-
menservices clinic. “We are gratified by the pro
spect of the suspected killer of Dr. Barnett Slepian
being brought to justice,” said Cathleen Cleaver,
director of planning and information for the
Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities of the National
Conference of Catholic Bishops. “Every human life
has inestimable value and no one has the right to
kill,” she said in a statement.
Greek Orthodox leader urges
POPE TO ADDRESS CATHOLIC
“intransigence”
Athens (CNS)
T he head of Greece’s Orthodox Church appealed
for Pope John Paul II to take “further steps” to
ward recognizing Catholic Church “intransigence”
before his planned May visit to the country. Greek
Orthodox Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens prai
sed Pope John Paul for regretting past “church
Etendltoe Hopscotch
errors,” but said others also must be addressed.
Archbishop Christodoulos said in a March 23 state
ment: “For the first time in the Vatican’s age-old
intransigence, this pope has shown serious signs of
apologizing. But this is barely the first step. There
are many further ones which need to be taken.”
Merger of two Catholic media
GROUPS NEARS COMPLETION
Washington (CNS)
T he merger of two international Catholic media
organizations is nearing completion in a process
that began in 1998. Unda, a group for Catholics in
the television and radio industries, and OCIC, a body
for Catholics in film, will become Signis during a
world congress in Rome in November. Unda is the
Latin word for “wave”; OCIC is a French acronym
for the International Catholic Organization for
Cinema and Audiovisual. The new organization, like
the two that are merging to form it, will have Vatican
sanction, according to Frank Morock, an Unda board
member and president of Unda-USA. Barbara D.
King, Director of Communications for the Diocese
of Savannah, is a member of the Unda-USA board.
Scientists, others debate human
cloning on Capitol Hill
Washington (CNS)
R esearchers who intend to clone human beings
clashed with genetics experts who oppose it in
a seven-hour congressional hearing March 28. The
Bush administration and members of the House
Thursday, April 5, 2001
subcommittee that convened the hearing indicated
a strong desire to create a federal law banning
human cloning — a move thwarted three years ago
by an inability to reach consensus on specifics of
such a law. Human reproductive cloning should not
be attempted because “it is simply too dangerous
technically and raises far too many ethical and
social questions,” said lead-off witness Dr. Thomas
Okarma, president of the biopharmaceutical com
pany Geron. He expressed opposition on behalf of
Biotechnology Industry Organization.
Cardinal, magazine warn against
RAPID LEFEBVRE RECONCILIATION
Rome (CNS)
F ollowing news reports suggesting an imminent
Vatican reconciliation with a group of followers
of the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, an influen
tial French cardinal and an Italian Catholic magazine
said the Vatican should proceed slowly and cau
tiously. Cardinal Pierre Eyt of Bordeaux said the
unresolved “doctrinal, liturgical, sacramental (and)
institutional” differences with the Priestly Society of
Saint Pius X appeared too great to overcome “with
out profound study and sufficient delay.” In a similar
vein, the editors of Jesus, an Italian monthly maga
zine published by the Pauline Fathers, said they
were troubled by reports suggesting that a formal
reconciliation might be reached by Easter, April 15.
Vatican sources have said that while contacts with
the society have continued, it is too early to speak of
concrete moves toward reconciliation.
