Catholic communicators honor The Southern Cross
T he execution of Timothy Mc
Veigh, Islam’s history of vio
lence and the need to reach youth
through music were three topics at
a Catholic communications confer
ence held in San Antonio last week.
Also at the Unda-USA 2001 Ge
neral Assembly, the Catholic Com
munications Campaign awarded a
Certificate of Merit to The Sou
thern Cross. Presented by Coad
jutor Bishop Joseph A. Galante of
Dallas, the award is for the Keep
sake Edition of the newspaper,
which was published in November
2000 to commemorate the 150th
anniversary of the Diocese of
Savannah.
San Antonio Archbishop Patrick
F. Flores told the communicators to
approach their ministry like the
Franciscans who traveled long dis
tances to spread the faith in the
Americas. “They didn’t let distance
stop them, and neither should we,”
he said in a homily at the opening
liturgy in San Antonio’s San
Fernando Cathedral.
The assembly ended with the
annual Gabriel Awards, a ceremony
where silver angel statuettes are
presented to TV and radio pro
grams that serve, enrich and chal
lenge audiences. Because interna
tionally Unda will merge with
OCIC, the International Catholic
Association for Cinema and Audio
visual, next fall, a first ever Gabriel
Award was given to a feature film.
The winner was Erin Brockovich
from Universal Studios.
Jury members said the movie’s
central character’s actions “under
line how each person, even one
who makes poor choices, has a pro
fane mouth and limited social
skills, can make a difference if she
puts her mind to it.”
Leading up to the Gabriels, a
panel of Savannah broadcasters
met at the Catholic Pastoral Center
in Savannah in July for preliminary
judging of a TV category of the
annual awards.
Also at the Gabriels, veteran
broadcast entertainer Art Linkletter
was named the recipient of the
2001 Gabriel Personal Achieve
ment Award. “Everything he has
done in his professional life and
continues to do at the age of 89
stands as a fitting Christian exam
ple to all of us,” Unda-USA Presi
dent Frank Morock said of Link-
letter. Morock co-hosted the awards
ceremony with singer Vikki Carr.
Bud Welch, the father of a young
woman killed in the 1995 Okla
homa City bombing, a priest who
visited convicted bomber Timothy
McVeigh, and another priest who
befriended Texas death row inmate
Oliver Cruz, participated in a pow
erful panel at the assembly on why
they oppose capital punishment.
Initially desiring to “see Tim
McVeigh fry”, Welch said a “tre
mendous weight was lifted from
my shoulders” the September 1998
day he held a tearful meeting with
the McVeigh family. “I felt closer
to God than I ever had before in
my life,” Welch said.
Kenneth Woodward, religion edi
tor of Newsweek magazine since
1964, gave a provocative talk on
the religious overtones of the
recent terrorist attacks, saying the
media has been “too fast and eager
to absolve Islam” from any respon
sibility for fanatics who have used
the religion to legitimize terrorism.
While Christianity probably has
been more violent throughout its
history than Islam, that shouldn’t
