don’t know whether to be more impressed by
the excitement and enthusiasm that the fourth,
fifth, and sixth graders of Saint James School,
Savannah, put into their Latin Fiesta on October
13 or by the amount of research and preparation
that these students applied to accomplish such an
interesting and informative array of presentations.
Students participated in the festivities by con
tributing to work on posters, research, costumes
and oral presentations. The fourth graders re
searched Chile and Paraguay, the fifth graders
studied Uruguay and Bolivia and the sixth graders
explored Panama and Venezuela.
The third annual Fiesta was held in the cafeteria,
which was transformed into a center of learning
displaying posters and art work as well as set up
for presentations to the l-8th grades at the school
who were joined by parents, faculty and staff.
Students enjoyed soaking in all the information
presented as well as the question and answer ses
sions that followed.
Some of the highlights of the day occurred when
students demonstrated dances or when sixth grad
er Austin Josey literally drove through “Venezu
ela” sampling various foods offered in that coun
try in an ingenious hand-crafted automobile.
Since each student at Saint James takes Spanish
from Senora Lucinda Rivera starting in Pre-K
through the eighth grade; the student audience eas
ily understood greetings and Spanish terms used
and were able to respond accordingly. Facts
abounded as they learned about the location, flag,
agriculture, climate, history, famous people and
music from each country.
By studying other countries, students leam to
understand and appreciate the diversity of our
world. This mini-trip to Latino countries proved to
be a wonderful learning tool for the entire school.
