Update: Bishop tries to
HELP MIGRANTS AT INTERNA
TIONAL bridge in El Paso
WASHINGTON (CNS)
B ishop Mark J. Seitz of the U.S.
border Diocese of El Paso, Texas,
walked and prayed with a group of
migrants at the Lerdo International
Bridge in El Paso June 27 as they
sought asylum in the U.S. Cameras
surrounded him, as some individuals
nearby held large posters with the faces
of children who have recently died on
the border. The El Paso bishop then
accompanied migrants to Ciudad Juarez
in Mexico, where they met with leaders
of the Diocese of Ciudad Juarez and
visited Casa del Migrante, a diocesan
migrant shelter. He issued a statement,
which he provided June 27 to Catholic
News Service. "As a Catholic and
Christian leader on the border, I am
often called to be a doctor of the soul,"
he said, delivering the statement in
English and Spanish. "Standing here
at the U.S.-Mexico border, how do we
begin to diagnose the soul of our coun
try? A government and society which
view children in U.S. custody worse
than animals; a government and society
who turn their backs on pregnant moth
ers, babies and families and make them
wait in Ciudad Juarez without a thought
to the crushing consequences on this
challenged city.... This government and
this society are not well."
Remains of Archbishop
Sheen transferred from
New York to Peoria
Diocese
PEORIA, III. (CNS)
P eoria Bishop Daniel R. Jenky
announced June 27 that the remains
of Archbishop Fulton Sheen were being
transferred to the Cathedral of St. Mary
of the Immaculate Conception from St.
Patrick's Cathedral in New York. Bishop
Jenky also said the sainthood cause for
the archbishop, a native of the Peoria
Diocese, has resumed. On June 7 the
New York Court of Appeals rejected
a final appeal from the Archdiocese
of New York and the trustees of St.
Patrick's Cathedral, who sought to keep
the remains of the famed orator and
media pioneer interred at St. Patrick's,
where they have rested since after his
death Dec. 9,1979. "Shortly after this
ruling, the Archdiocese of New York
and the Diocese of Peoria cooperated in
arranging for the transfer," the diocese
signing of the "Fundamental Agreement
Between the Holy See and the State of
Israel," which established diplomatic
relations between the Catholic Church
and the Jewish state. The formal open
ing of relations took place June 15,1994.
A daylong event June 19 at Fordham
University's Lincoln Center campus to
mark the anniversary was sponsored
by the Consultation of the National
Council of Synagogues, the U.S.
Conference of Catholic Bishops and
the General Consulate of Israel in New
York. An afternoon panel with New
York Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan and
three other speakers addressed the sig
nificance of the agreement and its trans
formative effects on Catholic-Jewish
relations. "For both Jews and Christians,"
he said, "humanity is on the right path
when human agreements mirror the
divine will, and that's what we believe
occurred a quarter-century ago, when
the leaders of the government of Israel
and the Church universal signed an
agreement stressing reconciliation, trust,
the priority of dialogue — all grounded
in human rights and religious liberty."
said in a news release. "This transfer
followed civil law and Church law."
"The proper civil permits for the trans
fer were secured. Church law requires
that the transfer of the remains of one
considered for beatification must to be
done without any solemnity. As a result,
the transfer could not be publicized in
advance," it said. No liturgical ceremony
or public gathering could be held during
the transfer, the diocese added.
