Drar Brethren : —By request of Mount Olive
church, I send you an obituary notice of the death
of brother F. GARDNER, and the resolutions adop
ted by Mount Olive church, Scott Cos., Miss.
Whereas, it has pleased the Great Author of our
being, by a sudden and [melancholy dispensation of
his providence to afflict our hearts by the death of
one of our members, who was endeared to us by the
tenderest ties of love and friendship, we therefore
deem it due to his memory to publish the same in
the Southern Baptist Messenger.
FREDRICK GARDNER was born in Creshaw
Dist., S. C., Oct. 28, 1801, and was married there to
Martha Flemin, Nor. 29, 1821, and moved to Georgia,
in the year 1829, and joined the Primitive Baptist
church during the Summer of 1832, and was baptiz
ed by Eld. Bossey, at Shiloh church, Monroe Cos.,
Ga., and in the year 1853, moved to Scott Cos., Miss.,
and joined Mt. Olive church, and during the time of
his life with us, preached Christ the way, and only
way that sinners mast be saved ; and seemed to im
prove in his gift, and increase in zeal, for the cause.
Our brother has left a large family of amiable and
respectable children to mourn over the loss of a kind
father. May the gracious and unerring hand of the
Lord guide and protect them, and also their aged
mother, who is also a member with us. There is a
painful pleasure in recoiding the death of our belov
ed brother—painful to be deprived of his society,
and to see his seat vacant in the pulpit—but it is
pleasant to follow hi* in our reflections to his house
that is not made with* hands which is eternal in the
heavens, where the Lamb in the midst of the throne
shall feed him, and lead him to living fountains of
water, and God shall wipe away all tears from his
eyes.
“ Thero saints of all ages in harmony meet
Their Savior and brethren transported to greet,
While the anthems of rapture unceasingly roll,
And the smile of the Lord is the feast of the soul.”

t( Forget Not Wliat Tliy Ransom Cost.”
Pilgrim to the better country,
Traveler in the narrow road,
Lighted by the distant glories
Os the city ©f our God ;
Where the cloud of care comes o’er you,
And the glorious light before you,
In temptation's night is lost;
“ Forget not what thy ransom cost.”
When sweet hopes of earth-born pleasnre
Seek to ravish all thy soul;
When thy path seems dark and thorny,
And far off the shining goal;
When soft airs and pleasant flowers
Tempt to Folly's wild'ring bowers,
Till heaven for earth is well nigh lost,
“ Forget not what thy ransom cost.”
When thy wandering steps returning,
Find too steep the backward road,
While the sin-taint on thy spirit,
liangeth like a weary load;
Think—thy Savior bore the burden,
Think—for you he purchased pardon;
Take, in meekness,—take the cross,
e< Forget not what thy ransom cost.”
SOUTHERN BAPTIST MESSENGER-
Think, for you he bore the hiding
Os his Father’s tender face,
Think —he left the heavenly mansions
To prepare you for a place.
By the tears he wept in Jordan,
By the anguish of the garden,
By his wounds, and by his cross, , <
“ Forget not what thy ransom cost.” 1
When thy lot is dark and dreary,
Think of Him foot-worn and sore;
Comforting the sick and Aveary,
Seeking out the erring poor.
When from him compassion learning
When like him o'er sinners yearning,
Can you measure earth’s vain dross,
With the price your ransom cost ?
We are hid behind the portals
Consecrated by his blood ;
Here can no destroying angel
Pass with his avenging rod,
Ohl if tempted e’er to leave Him,
Oh 1 if tempted e’er to grieve Him,
Let his love, and let his cross,
Remind thee what thy ransom cost.
