The Bethesda Alumni for several years
have tried to get new beds to replace
those at Bethesda which have been in
use for the past thirty or more years.
During the war it was impossible to get
these beds as we were unable to obtain
priorities. When the war ended we
were still unable to obtain these beds
due to the fact that the manufacturers
took sometime to readjust their manu¬
facturing from military use to civilian
and private sales.
We wanted to be sure that we would
secure substantial beds and waited until
The Simmons Company could furnish
the type beds we were after. Mr.
Charles C. Mordecai, chairman of the
Bed Fund has finally reported that we
would have 100 new beds by Anniver¬
sary, these beds costing us $4000.00. He
has had several of these beds on dis¬
play and have been approved by a com¬
mittee of Mr. and Mrs. Max E. Living¬
ston, Bernard F. Diamond and himself.
At the last meeting of the club the en¬
tire members that were in attendance

BED FUND
accompanied Mr. Mordecai to his store
anti injected these beds and approved
his wisdom in selecting this type of
bed. The mattresses will be thick and
each mattress will have a rubber mat.
Due to the fact that Bethesda Home
for Boys is a member of the Commu¬
nity Chest which prevents us from ac¬
tively soliciting the public for funds
such as advertising in the newspapers,
broadcasting, and displaying these beds
in windows downtown it is necessary
for the members to raise the money
through their friends. We have secured
approximately $1000.00 toward this fund
therefore you can see that we are a
long way from our goal. Any former
Bethesda boy or any person interested
in contributing toward the Bed Fund
may do so by sending their check in
immediately to Mr. Charles C. Morde¬
cai, 403 West Broughton St., or to
Tom Moore, secretary of the club.
Mrs. J. Fred Simpson, in memory of
Lt. J. Fred Simpson, has donated $500.00
Jr., Manager. Tickets are being sold
by the members priced at one dollar
per couple or stag. Fred Shafer, chair¬
man of the entertainment committee
along with John Anchors and Billy
Lettow are in charge of arrangements.
Dance tickets are being sent to pros¬
pective purchasers hoping that they
will buy or sell these tickets, or give
same to their employees. The club will
furnish the boys plenty of lemonade on
anniversary and will help share in the
expense of the dinner served at Be¬
thesda on anniversary day. We are
also furnishing 100 brand new beds
costing $4000.00. If tickets are mailed
you, a self-addressed envelope will ac¬
company the tickets, please mail checks
to the club office.
