MARRIAGES
HU RROUGHS-SC A N DRKTT The
marriage of Miss Mary Burroughs,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. 0, W. Bur¬
roughs and Jay Morrow Scandrett of
Englewood, N. Y., took place in July,
1948. The ceremony was performed by
the Rev. Tom White, pastor of the White
Bluff Presbyterian Church on the lawn
at Wildwood, the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Heard, in the presence of only
the members of the immediate family.
Mr. and Mrs. Scandrett are making
their home in Salem, Va., where he is
professor of sociology and economics at
Roanoke College.
COWAN-ANCHORS—The wedding of
Miss Barbara Cowan and John Lee
Anchors took place in June of 1948, at
the home of the bride, on East Bolton,
St., Palms, magnolia leaves, white gladi¬
oli and dahlias formed a background
for the ceremony, which was performed
by the Rev. Leroy G. Cleverdon, pastor
of the First Baptist Church, After a
wedding trip Mr. and Mrs. Anchors went
to Atlanta, Georgia, where he will finish
school at Emory University, after having
graduated from Armstrong Junior Col¬
lege here in Savannah. Mrs. Anchors
is on the library staff at the University.
HASKINS-JOHNSON—The marriage
of Miss Carlotta Marie Haskins, daugh¬
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Elmore
Haskins, and John Archibald Johnson
was solemnized at a lovely home cere¬
mony which took place in July 1948.
The Rev. James E. Graham, pastor of
the First Presbyterian Church, officiated
in the presence of the families and a
few close friends.
TIENCKEN-HODGES—The marriage
of Miss Ann Rebecca Tiencken, daugh¬
ter of Mrs. W. N. Tiencken and the
late Mr. Tiencken to Edward Hodges
was solemnized in July 1948, at the
Trinity Methodist Church with the Rev.
G, E. Clary officiating. Miss Tiencken
worked for the Bethesda Alumni for
about a year.
GRUBBS-GODWIN—Miss Theresa
Grubbs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. I .
Grubbs, and Charles H. Godwin were
married in September, 1948, at the Chris¬
tian and Missionary Alliance Church. The
ceremony was performed by the Rev.
John W. Klinepeter in a setting of white
gladioli, palms, magnolia leaves and
burning candles.
WILSON-WHITE—At the Whitefield
Chapel at Bethesda, in the presence of
many friends and relatives, Miss Louise
Wilson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Vance W. Wilson, became the bride of
the Rev. Tom White. Palms, gladioli and
chrysanthemums decorated the chapel,
which was lighted with many candles.
The cermony, which took place in No¬
vember was performed by the Rev. La¬
mar Wainwright of Eastman, and Mrs.
Claude Corry played the wedding music.
Claude Corry was Mr. White’s best man,
and the ushers were Everett and Vance
Wilson, brothers of the bride, Wade
Lynch and Drexel Kicklightpr.

A LDE RM A N-RICH A R D SON The
wedding of Miss Anna Mae Alderman,
daughter of Mr. arid Mrs. Lester Aider
man, to Charles C. Richardson, Jr., was
held in July, 1948, at the Christian and
Missionary Church with the Rev. John
W. Klinepeter, pastor of the church, of¬
ficiating.
MEADOWS-FLETCHER Mrs. Wil
liam Meadows of Durham, N. C., form¬
erly of Savannah, announces the mar¬
riage of her daughter, Margerat Eliza¬
beth, of Atlanta, to Carl Russell Fletcher,
Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Russell
Fletcher, of Birmingham, Ala., The wed¬
ding took place in June, 1948, and was
pel formed by Canon Alfred Hardeman
at Michael Memorial Chapel, Episcopal
Catherdal of St. Phillips in the presence
of the families and close friends. The
couple are making their home at 151
Fifteenth St, N. E. Atlanta.
BACON-WILLIAMS—Miss Gene Bac¬
on became the bride of Robert F. Wil¬
liams on December 2, 1948. Mrs. Wil¬
liams is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
William Earl Bacon, Sr., of Pembroke,
Georgia.
TURNER-CALLAHAN—Miss Merry
dale Turner and Eugene I). Callahan
were married in November, 1948.
BAGLEY-HORNE Mr. and Mrs. Jo¬
seph D. Bagley announce the marriage
of their daughter Marguerite to James
W. Horne on Monday, December twenty
seventh, nineteen hundred and forty
eight at Anderson, S. C. Their home will
be 317 S. Milledge Avenue. Athens, Ga.
BIRTHS
Mr. and Mrs, 0. L. Sims announce
the birth of a son, Orville Leroy, Jr.,
on August 13, 1948, at the Warren
Candler Hospital. Mrs. Sims was the
former Miss Ann von Waldner.
Cpl. and Mrs. William C. Robbins an¬
nounce the birth of a daughter on
July 7, 1948, at the St. Joseph’s Hos¬
pital. She will be named Christina
Cecelia. Mrs. Robbins was formerly Miss
Carol Ceclia Stamey.
Mr. and Mrs. William Ludden God¬
frey announce the birth of a son on
June 19, 1948, He was named Donald
Elsworth. Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey live
at 2022 East 38th St.
Mr, and Mrs. Boyd L. Coleman of
Ellabelle, formerly of Wagner Heights,
announce the birth of twins, a boy and
a girl, at the Warren Candler Hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmore R. Sims announce
the birth of a daughter, Jeanette Eliza¬
beth, November 26 at St. Joseph’s Hos¬
pital.
Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Hagan announce
the birth of a daughter, Cynthia Regis,
on December 17. Mrs. Hagan is the
former Miss Regis Cameron.
Ensign W. Fred Oakley and Mrs,
Oakley have a daughter. Fred at pre¬
sent is at sea and Mrs. Oakley is at
Newport., R. .1
February, 1949
Dr. and Mrs. Hubert W. Coleman,
Avon Park, Fla., had a son in March,
1948. His name is Robert Wesley Cole¬
man.
Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Opper, 933 Rut¬
ledge Avenue, Charleston, S. C., had a
son in January of 1948. His name is
James Bennett Opper.
Mr. and Mrs. John A. Anderson, 323
East Jones St., had a son. John is now
connected with the Men’s Quality Shop,
24 East Broughton St. Their son was
born October 12, at St. Josephs Hospital
and was named James Andrew.
SICKNESS
OLE W. BURROUGHS—Mr. Bur¬
roughs was in the Oglethorpe Hospital
during October. He returned to Be
thesda when Mr. Livingston resigned
and held the job as superintendent
temporary until Mr. Claude Corry was
appointed as superintendent. Mr. Bur¬
roughs has not been well since entering
the hospital and he is now better but
is resting and recuperating at his home
at Wildwood on Fcrgueson Avenue.
Billy Lettow was injured in an auto
accident in October. Billy was driving
when he ran into a greyhound bus at
Montgomery and Victory Drive. Billy
suffered a broken foot and was hos¬
pitalized at the Warren Candler for
about a month. He has recovered so as
to be back at work with the Florida
Georgia Tractor Co.
Richard Crews was in the Warren
Candler Hospital in January where he
had an appendix operation.
William W. Hyrne was in the War¬
ren Candler Hospital for three weeks
having a heart attack. He has recov¬
ered and is back at work with the
Morning News-Evening Press.
Dowman Waters suffered a severe
back injury from a fall from an elec¬
tric pole and spent several months in
bed at the Warren Candler Hospital and
at his home. He is employed with the
Savannah Electric Co. He has recovered
and back at work.
Mrs. Mary Conner, mother of Farris,
Melvin and Matthew, was in the Candler
hospital. She has recovered and is back
home at 1905 E. Anderson.
Charles Pannal was injured in an
accident betwen a taxi and another car.
He spent sometime in the Marine Hos¬
pital. He lives at 16 West 53rd St.
Alvin Clements of 324 7th St., Jack¬
sonville, Fla., was ill for several months.
He is working now.
Mrs. Nafosia Anchors, mother of
Francis and John spent several weeks
in the Oglethorpe Hospital. She is now
home at 602 Pennsylvania Ave.
