Homecoming
Game
An old rivalry will
resume in the Morris Mem
orial Gymnasium when the
Middle Georgia College War
riors take on the Columbus
Rebels in the annual Home
coming Game. Game time is
8 P.M.
The game kicks off MGC’s
big weekend wih the Home
coming Dance being held on
Saturday night in the gym.
Columbus College, which
became a 'four year college
a few years ago, was once
one of the biggest rivals that
MGC ever faced. However,
because the rivalry between
the schools became so tense
the competition was discon
tinued. But, again the MGC
team faces the Columbus
Rebels.
The Columbus team is re
turning six lettermen from
last year and has five fresh
men on the team. Some of
the top players on the squad
are: 6’ 4” John Barrett,
a sophomore from Homer-
ville, Ga.; 5’ 10” Gary Dozier
a sophomore from Cataula,
Ga.; and 6’ 3” Jeff Lange,
a sophomore from Dundee,
Illinois. The head coach at
Columbus College is Charles
Rmrsdala
Mew Women's P.E.
"Foundations”, a new pro
gram in the women’s physical
education department, at
tempts a personal approach
to physical fitness.
Each girl began by evalua
tion her health and appear
ance. Muscle size and tone,
the amount and location of
fat, form, balance, power,
agility, and accuracy were
some of the things tested.
The first test was the phy
sical fitness test which was
required of all Miss Souther
land’s students.
This test included the shut
tle run to test agility and the
squat thrust to test endurance.
Later, observation of the wrist
pinching the fat of the upper
arm revealed the body type
(endomorph, ectomorph, or
mesomorph). Calorie sheets
were provided to inspire re
ducing, if necessary.
Posture tests included look
ing for spinal curvatures,
bowed legs, and balance.
Emphasis was not on testing
but improving. Exercises for
the different parts of the body
were learned and each student
proceeded at her own level.
Variations in the course in
cluded a brief introduction
to yoga for relaxation, learn
ing the correct procedure for
simple everyday activities
such as lifting and carrying,
and sometimes a break from
the exercises to experiment
with badminton or the tramp
oline.
By learning the necessities
of physical fitness, it is hoped
that these students will re
member to pinch the fat to
test, to ponder about their
problem, and to push their
bodies to their maximum fit
ness.
Dancers Add To
Half Time
Along with the Middle Ga,
majorettes and cheerleaders,
other attractions performing
during the half-time at the
basketball games will be the
dancers. As a part of their
act these girls will perform
original routines as part of
the half-time show.
The girls who make up the
dancers are: Sandra Perdue,
Marsha Graziano, Debbie
Jones and Betty Gray, They
will be doing many dances
such as modern jazz and the
usual college steps.
These girls have been
working hard to make MGC’s
half-times more enjoyable.
Their first appearance will
be after Thanksgiving
vacation.

their viewpoints on the season.

Randy Howell - How do you
feel about this year’s team
as compared to last year’s?
"The biggest advantage this
team has over last year's
is a definite increase in
height. We have added hustle
and we expect this year’s
record to be better than last
year’s.”
How has practice pro
gressed so far? “With the
exception of a.few bad passes,
we've been looking pretty well
in practice.”
How many years have you
played basketball? "I’vebeen
playing basketball sincegrade
school, but I consider my real
playing time as about five
years.”
Who, in your opinion, are
some of the top players on
the squad? “Everyone has
seen our returning lettermen.
As for new players, keep an
eye on Richard Johnson, Steve
Stevens, and John Higgenbo
tham, We don’t emphasize
a single player but rather
teamwork.”
Who do you think will be
the toughest teams Middle Ga,
faces on the schedule? "Jud
ging from last year and the
reports I’ve heard, ABAC will
continue to be one of our
biggest rivals as well as South
Georgia. Both teams are
tough. DeKalb will also be
tough competition.”
Do you plan to play basket
ball at a senior college after
completion at MGC. “I’ve
spent so much time with bas
ketball; I couldn’t think of
going to a senior college with
out going out for basketball.”
John Higgenbotham - What
do you think of the basketball
team so far? “I think we’re
doing real good so far.”
Who do you think will be
the top teams on the schedule?
"I think South Georgia, ABAC,
and DeKalb will be the
toughest.”
How long have you been
playing basketball? "Two
years;”
Do you plan to play basket
ball at a senior college after

College? “Yes.”

larly tough? "Ernie Wilcox
from South Georgia will be
very tough.”
New Baseball
Field
The 1970 Baseball Warriors
will be playing on a newbase-
ball field that is now being
constructed across the lake.
It will. replace the old field
which is located out by the
old football stands.
The majority of the work
is being done by the baseball
players themselves and the
field should be ready by the
1970 season.
Coach Umstattd feels the
new field will be one of the
best in the state by spring
quarter.
Shaping Up
The Middle Georgia College
Coaching Staff is presently
studying ways of improving
a variety of activities in the
physical education depart
ment. At this time the pro
gram is still in the planning
stages.
Several of the activities
planned are as follows:
(1) Student representation.
All Physical Education class
es have elected a member to
represent them on a Physical
Education Improvement Com
mittee. These students will
discuss the problems and
ways to improve the P. E.
program. The department
will then put these suggestions
into force.
(2) Equipment. The P.E.
department has footballs,
table tennis equipment, soft-
balls, bats, and tennis rackets
that are available to the stu
dents. This equipment can be
checked out from any coach
or work study student Al* 0
two sets of golf clubs will be
available shortly. The clubs
have arrived but bags have
not been received,
(3) Dance Class. This
class will be available to stu
dents who feet that they need
to improve their dancing, ft
will be a non-credit class,
not a social affair.
(4) Physical Education
Club. This club will be open
to all physical education ma
jors. It is pos sib le that mem
bers of this club could address
civic groups to explain MGC’s
P.E. program,
(5) Spring Day, One day
could be set aside to promote
good will among students.
This would be "funday.” Tug-
of-war between dorms, pie
eating contests, and other
games would be included,
Students would decide and help
plan the activities for the day,
(6) Faculty Children. One
day a month could be set
aside for the faculty’s child
ren. P.E. students could show
cartoons and direct games for
the youngsters.
The program is not final
at this'moment. The success
or failure will depend largely
upon student participation,
The Coaching Staff or Dr.
Waters welcomes any ques
tions or suggestions any
student might have.
Middle Georgia’s Physical
Education Department is pro
viding a recreational equip
ment checkout system this
year. Students check outvar-
ious equipment such as; bas
ketballs, golf clubs, footballs,
tennis rackets, and many other
items. All the students must
do to check out these articles
is present their ID cards to
Coach Umstattd.
The physical education de
partment has also been using
a video-tape replay machine
this quarter in their P, E.
classes. It has proven to
be very useful.
Coach Umstattd also an
nounced that the Intramural
Basketball teams should start
thinking about organizingtheir
teams for the winter quarter.
