Squaws
& Warrior
Monday night, Oct. 19., the
Warrior’s Club held a meeting
to select squaws for the 1970-
71 basketball season.
Fifty-five girls participated
in the try-outs. Girls ingroups
of five did a yell. The War
rior’s Club members then chose
16 girls to participate in he
final try-outs. Out of these
16 girls 10 were chosen squaws.
The Squaws for 1970-71 sea
son are Phyllis Stubbs, Jana
Meadows, Cynthia Cook, Vicki
Willis, Karen Burnett, Linda
Whitaker, Nan Turner, Janis
Gasbins, Janice Tucker and
June Capelle.
They help the cheerleaders
with yells during basketball
games as well as help make
posters and promote spirit,
Wednesday night, October 14,
the Warriors Club selected the
“Warrior” for the 1970-71 sea
son. Nominated were Toby
Stokes, Jerry Thompson and
Skip Young. Each nominee had
to do a Warrior dance.
Toby Stokes was selected and
we wish him luck. We know
you’ll do a good job!

Homecoming
Events
With Homecoming only a week
away, the plans are nearing
completion. In case you ha
ven’t been informed, Home
coming will take place on Nov
ember 13th and 14th. Things
will get underway at 3 p.m.
on Friday afternoon with a par
ade through downtown Cochran.
Immediately following the par
ade, there will be an old fash
ioned Barbecue which will take
place behind the college cafe
teria.
Friday night will bring on
the Traditional Homecoming
game. This year the Warriors
host Norman College. During
halftime, the 1969 Homecoming
Queen, Miss Iris Weeks, will
relinquish her crown to a de
serving successor. After the
ballgame, the Middle Georgia
Pep Band will entertain us with
some good Rock.
On Saturday, the dorms and
clubs on campus will compete
in a field day. This event
has been held in the past, but
was discontinued for unknown
reasons. We expect a large
turn-out for this event.
Homecoming will come to a
c lose on Saturday night with he
Sounds of “The Men of Distinc
tion”, performing a dance and
show. The dance will be held in
the Morris Gymnasium and will
last from 8 p.m. to 12 p.m.

The 1970-71 edition of the
basketball Warriors will make
their debut this Tuesday night,
November 10th, when they will
oppose the Georgia Southwes
tern “B” Team in the second
game of the Tipoff Tournament
here at Morris Gym on the 10th
and 11th.
The Warriors have been busy
practicing for the past month
in preparation for the season
ans with seven returning letter-
men and an array of fine fresh
men, Coach Rogers if very op
timistic.
“Practice has been coming
along real well so far,” Coach
Rogers commented, “we’ve
been working a lot on defense
which I feel was one of our
main weaknesses last year.
We’re comingalong well butyou
never know until the game starts
and you’re under pressure.”
“I was real pleased,” he ad
ded, “that John Higgenbotham,
one of our returning sophomo
res is recovering from his knee

injury ... I have also been im
pressed with the shotting and
ball-handling of WillieWatkins,
Richard Oglesbee, and David
Reddish, three of our fresh
men.”
Practice has produced one
casualty so far. Steve Stevens,
a 6'6” sophomore forward who
was third leading scorer on the
team last year will be lost to
the team for about four weeks
with a broken finger.
The Tipoff Tournament will
feature Chipola Junior College
from Marianna, Florida; Alex
ander City Junior College from
Alexander City, Ala.; and the
Georgia Southwestern “B”
team from Americus along with
Middle Georgia.
Middle Georgia’s opponent
the first night, Georgia South
western, will bring an exper
ienced tough ballclub into this
tournament. Their team is
composed of four players who
played In the junior college
circuit last year: Mike Qgle-v.
For Opener
sbee, the brother of Middle
Georgia’s Richard, who played
for Gordon Military last year;
Phil Watts, a guard who played
for Norman Park last year;
Gary Phillips, a forward from
Norman Park and Mike Pierce,
who played last year at Gaines
ville Junior College.
Chipola Junior College from
Marianna, Florida, brings one
of the most distinguished re
cords into this tournament.
Their coach Milton Johnson,
needs only four more wins to
capture his 200th junior college
victory. During the past nine
years, Chipola has a record of
196-66 plus three Regional
Championships and six con
ference division titles. Their
team this year has only two
starters from last year but will
be real tough.
Alexander City Junior Col
lege from Alexander City, Ala.,
returnes all five starters from
last years team which was 17-9
and finished second in the
Southern Division of the Ala
bama Junior College Associa
tion. They were also ranked in
the top four teams defensively
in Region 17,
Chipola and Alexander City
will play at 7 o’clock on the
first night followed by Geor
gia Southwestern and Middle
Georgia at 8:45. The losers
of the night before will play
a consolation game at 7 the
next night with the winners
meeting at 8:45 for the cham
pionship.
