One-To-One Is Fine Offering
By Andreana Partain
British rock’s chief optimist
is back on the music scene with
a new album. One to One is
Howard Jones' new collection of
sensitive melodies and elec
tronic sounds blended soulfully
with the tenor voice of Jones.
One to One is an example of
Jones growing sophistication
and feeling for the music itself.
His ‘‘You know 1 Love You...
Don't, You?" has a strong grip
tvo today's dance sounds. Ho
matter how technical his music
seems to get, he never loses
sight of his optimistic themes.
His ‘‘Balance of Love (Give and
Take)" explores the problem of
selfish love and how wrong it is.
As usual, One to One con
tains some great keyboard
sounds. As in "Good Luck, Bad
Luck." and ‘‘SLep Into These
Shoes." that seem to be slightly
jazz influenced. Jones’ musical
talents take a turn on ' ‘Give me
Strength," which is accented
whh a heavy reggae heat. His
music becomes almost chilling
on ‘‘Will You Still Be There?"
which explores the past and
questions personal security.
The album's most impressive
piece is “Little Bit of Snow," an
anti-drug ballad. The song
features Jones on piano in a
very lonely and soulful voice.
"Little Bit of Snow" pleads for
an end to the self-destruction of
drug abuse.
One to One is a great mixture
of music and lyrics. The album
is available on Elektra records.
