The papers are crowded with items of crime and disaster, sandwiched with seneational accounts of some absconding cashier or clerk, and an occasionl article that is beneficial to humanity. The result is a lowering of the moral standard. The daily paper has become the educator. We are passing through an era of lightning activity of brain and mucle; ex pertness is the demand of the hour. To be expert means to be familiar with the news of the day —a thorough knowledge of the present and sound" judg ment of the future. Time is limited; the newspaper is the natural resource. Then how important their purification. If our own papers were clean and wholesome, if the necessary items of crime were cut down to mere facts, barren of word pictures, and the transactions of the Court rooms served in the same manner, the spice of curiosity would not be whetted, the press keeps the public mind in a state of in tense curiosity. This is the proper thing for an educator; but for what? Is it the good, the true, and the beautiful, what is dictated upon. Do the reporters hunt for these kind of items? Is it knowl edge they wish to dispense or sensationalism? Bill Nwe has written a satire on the purity of politics, let him now give the press the same attention in his peculiar style. Let our wit and humor be clear and sparkling as a mountain stream. A hearty laugh is one of our choicest blessings. Wit and humor tarnished by slang and vulgarity is poison to the soul. Let us ring in the change, purify the press, let the skill of the surgeon in the use of the scalpel be wielded by the editors of the day; let them slash right and left at the vile encumbrance that mars the truth and purity of their daily lessons; with efforts lie the honor of our homes, the purity of our politics and the prosperity of our country. ■REDUCED RATES TO THE WEST. This Great necessity for the Southern and Southwestern states at the present time is sufficient population to utilize and make profitable the mil lions of acres of waste land, and capital to develop their dormant and incomputable wealth in mines and manufactures; and the better development of their latent resources will surely bring increased pros perity to aJI. To Agents and Connections: Our California excursions will leave Memphis via Little Rock and El Paso at 11.00 pm., Dec. Ist, and November 3d, 18th, 17th and 24th, at round trip rate of seventy-two dollars. CHANGE IN RETURN ROUTE. For tickets reading via Little Rock and El Paso, and returning via northern lines, Kansas City, St. Louis and Nettleton to Memphis, five dollars addi tional. Children over five (5) and under twelve (12) years of age travel at half rate. Ticket agents are expected to furnish tickets called for, and are not allowed to advise passengers as to choice of routes beyond their own lines. If you start with a second-class ticket, and later on you decide to change to first-class, you may do so by paying the conductor the difference in rates. Having once started on a certain train your ticket is good only for that train. If you stop off at a way station you forfeit your right of ride further without paying additional fare. Some companies allow conductors to issue stop-over checks to hold ers of first-class unlimited tickets but this is an act of accommodation on the part of the company. A limited ticket is not good for passage after the date of limitation has expired. This does not affect passengers on the train, provided they had started before the date of expiration. Where a passenger is traveling on a coupon ticket, and his ticket expires, he is entitled to ride as far as the coupon of the road he happens to be on at the time of expiration. If you lose your ticket, you are out that amount. The railway company is under no obligation to give you another nor allow you to ride free. Give notice of your loss to the conductor. Pay your fare to him, and take his receipt for the amount. When you reach your destination notify the ticket agent of your loss, and give him your address. If your ticket is found the company will refund your money on surrender of your receipt. I case of an error in your ticket, do not attempt to make the conductor rectify the mistake of the ticket agent. Explain the situation to him, and he will telegraph for instructions ; unless he hears to the contrary, pay your fare and take his receipt for the amount. When you reach your destination show your unused ticket and receipt to the ticket agent. He will either get instructions from the management or redeem the unused ticket at once, or will forward the ticket to the proper authority, and you will receive notice of the issue. The time which may elapse will depend upon how complica ted the affair is, and whether the fault was on the part of the company or yourself. CHECKING BAGGAGE. Railway regulations allow 150 pounds of baggage to each full ticket. Baggagemen are not allowed to check baggage until they have examined your ticket. On reaching your destination you are expected to claim your baggage within twenty-four hours, if not, you will be charged storage. Baggagemen cannot knowingly check anything but personal wearing apparel. All other articles have to be weighed and charged for as excess bag gage. > Dogs or guns cannot be checked, but must be put in charge of the train baggageman, who is allowed to collect payment from the owner at the rate of $1 for each dog and fifty cents for each gun. SLEEPING CARS. Sleeping car accommodations are always extra fare, and rates are fixed upon double berth, section and drawing room occupied by one or more passen gers. , • Porters are paid a starvation salary, and expect to make their living by sharking the travelers. An occasional tip will make them extra attentive. A double berth is sufficiently large to accommo date two persons. A section is a double lower and upper berth. The drawing room is a separate apartment, and has seat room and sleeping accommodations for six persons. At all points where a change of cars is necessary, the sleeping car conductor will telegraph ahead and secure the required accommodation without ex pense to the passenger. Families, and ladies and children traveling without escort, will receive par ticular attention. Travelers’ Information Bureau. Determined on making the "New Western Rail way Guide not only valuable to the traveling public in general, but also to the present in the latest form, useful and indispensible information to all classes of travel, it has established a “ Travelers' Information Bureau," through which persons will be able to gather the most reliable facts, as regards routes, at tractiveness, expenses, etc. We will at all times have furnished, free of charge, accurate informa tion, which the traveler would like to thoroughly understand before beginning a journey. How far is it ? What does it cost to get there ? etc. If you are a non-resident, and contemplate mak ing a trip to any point, and intend coming to Atlanta to purchase tickets, kindly inform us of the fact a day or so in advance, either by postal, telegram or letter, stating on what train you will arrive, and we will have you met upon your arrival here, by gentle manly agents, who will attend personally to purchas ing your tickets by the desired route, checking your baggage, and starting you on the right train. Special care and attention will be shown ladies with chil dren, or traveling without escort.
