College Secretary
Awarded Scholarship
Through the Woman’s Division of
Christian Service, the Crusade Schol
arship Committee of the Methodist
Church has awarded Miss Wilhelmina
J. Gilbert, for seven years secretary
to President James P. Brawley, a
scholarship for graduate study. She
has been admitted to the graduate
division of the Boston University
School of Public Relations where she
expects to matriculate in September,
1950, to study for the M.S. degree
in public relations.
Miss Wilhelmina Gilbert
Miss Gilbert, a native of Titusville,
Fla., has had a distinguished aca
demic record in Methodist Schools.
From Boylan-Haven High School in
Jacksonville, Florida, under the aus
pices of the Woman’s Division of
Christian Service, she was graduated
as valedictorian of her class. She
received the A.B. degree, Magna Cum
Laude, from Clark College in 1942,
majoring in business administration
and social science. Immediately fol
lowing graduation, she taught at Allen
High School in Asheville, N. C., a
position which she held until her re
turn to Clark as secretary to the Presi
dent in 1943.
In addition to her secretarial
duties, she has served as adviser to
the local chapter of Alpha Kappa
Mu Honorary Society of which she
is a member, as adviser to Sigma
Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Soror
ity, and has worked acitvely with the
college committee on public relations
and the committee on decorations
and arrangements.
The College wishes Miss Gilbert
much success in her new endeavor
and hopes that the efficiency which
has characterized her work here will
continue at Boston.
English Professor
CBS Award Winner
Mr. M. Carl Holman, instructor in
the Department of English at Clark
College, was the first Negro to win
an award for writing an original
play in the “Dr. Christian” Script
competition recently. Mr. Holman
flew to New York, at the expense of
the sponsors, to appear on the May
17th broadcast, and to receive a prize
of $350.00 for his script, “The Other
One.”
Mr. Holman is a graduate of Lin
coln University, Missouri, and re
ceived his master’s degree from the
University of Chicago. He has been
a member of the Clark faculty for
two years.

Mr. M. Carl Holman
In 1945, he won the Fiske award
for poetry which is awarded by the
LTniversity of Chicago. His poems
have also been published in Poetry of
the Negro which was edited by Arna
Bontemps and Langston Hughes.
From 1944 to 1946, he was a
Rosenwald Fellow studying creative
writing.
He is married to the former Miss
Mariella Ama of Atlanta, and has one
son, Kerry Glenn.
Announced
Harold Hamilton and David Stan
ley, both juniors, have been appointed
co-editors of the Clark Panther for
the next year.
Hamilton and Stanley have worked
with the Panther this year as staff
members and as guest editors. They
have been studying journalism for
the past year, and look to their new
positions as an opportunity to in
crease their journalistic training.
Both Hamilton and Stanley are
majoring in English.
