ATHLETES HONORED AT ALL-SPORTS BANQUET
More than two-hundred persons were
present at the Clark College All-Sports
Banquet on Thursday night at 8 o’clock
in Thayer Hall as awards were made to
varsity athletes, intra-mural tournament
winners, and to cheerleaders.
Eleven newi members were brought in
the Clark College Varsity Club as Offie
Clark, Roman Turmon, Hubert Ricks,
Freddie Jackson, William Rolle, Bobby
Leonard, Blaine Waynes, Nathaniel Crute,
Billy Harden, Norris Muldrow, and Eu
gene Brown received letter awards from
Coach Marion M. Curry for their perform
ances in football, basketball, and track.
President Brawley extended greetings
to the guests and introduced persons pres
ent who had done much to establish the
“athletic tradition of good sportmanship
among Clark athletes.”
Speaker for the evening was Mr. John
T. Fagan, Jr., who was graduated from
Clark with the Class of 1930. Mr. Fagan,
during his stay at Clark, wtas a member
of the famous “Black Battalion of
Death” which did much to glorify Clark
football teams. The speaker told of “Tra
ditions in Athletics at Clark College”. He
mentioned several former Clark football
and basketball players who helped to
“make the tradition of sportsmanship
which exists today”: Duke Williams, Rick
Roberts, Henry Dalton, Lesner Baker,
Philj Puckett, Elmer Baker, Ralph Long,
Harold Chambers, Aaron Watson, Sly
Williamson, and Johnny Richards.
Team captains were introducted by
Coach Leonidas Epps: Bennie Lowe and
Robert Phillips, basketball captains; John
Cannon, track team; captain. The custo
mary practice of introducing basketball
captains for the following year was not
observed. “Sonny” Epps, basketball
coach, said of the captains “They served
Well their teammates, and exhibited the
never say die spirit.”
Among recent Clark graduates present
was Raymond Williams, Class of’49. Oth
er guests were Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Wat
son, Mrs. J.J. Dennis, Mrs. C. R. Hamil
ton, Mr. Ralph Long, Mr. M. Carl Holman,
Mrs. James P. Brawley, Dean A.A. Mc-
Pheeters and Mrs. McPheeters, Mr. Wiley
Bolden, Miss Barbara Taylor, and Mrs.
W. N. Harper. Mr. Lewis F. Adams, Mr.
Frank A. Banks, and Dr. J. J. Dennis, of
the Athletic Association, were also pres
ent. Dr. Dennis served as Toastmaster.
Mr. Marion Jackson, sports editor of the
ATLANTA DAILY WORLD and Mr. Joel
Smith, of the WORLD, were guests from
the press. Mr. Bobby Brisindine, sports
caster for station WERD was also a guest
at the banquet.
The banquet closed with the singing of
the Alima Mater.

Faculty in
UNCF Effort
As a part of its efforts to help the U-
rited ! Negro College Fund, the Clark Col
lege faculty cn May 10 and 11 presented
in Davage Auditorium, Oscar Wilde’s
“The Importance of Being Earnest”, a
three act comedy.
Under the direction of Mrs. Emma Cun
ningham, of the Department of English
the cast composed entirely of faculty
members performed both nights before a
full house and turned in well.-polished
performances.
The cast included; Mr. Allbert Berrian,
Miss Willie Ruth McMullen, Miss Esther
Merle Jackson, Mr. Darwin Turner, Mrs.
Phoebe Burney, Miss Thelma Allison, Mr.
Harold Mazyck, Mr. George Ferguson, and
Mr. Wiley Bolden.
Entire proceeds from the presentation
were given to the Clark UNCF program.
