The Panther
Panthers End Season
In SIAC Tourney
by Clarence Carter
In the opening round of the Southern Inter-collegiate Athletic
Conference Tournament at Tuskegee, Alabama, the Panthers
scored an impressive 76-70 victory over the Bethune-Cookman
Wild Cats.
The Wild Cats of Bethune tried desperately to revenge an
earlier defeat at the hands of the mighty Panthers but did not
have the horses to do so.
The Panthers were led by Anthony Floyd with 21 points
followed by James Walls with 18 points
and Sonny Epps with 14 points. Clark
led 39-38 at the half.
In the Semi-Final round the Panthers
tasted defeat at the hands of the Golden
Tigers of Tuskegee. It would have to be
classified as a minor upset because the
Tigers entered tournament play unseeded.
The contest was a closely fought one
in which the outcome was in doubt up
until the final buzzer. But on the given
night, the Tigers were at their best. They
were not to be denied the right to play
in the finals the following evening.
Harry Woods scored the decisive basket with 6 seconds on
the clock to give Tuskegee a berth in the finals.
Sonny Epps led all scorers with 22 points while James Walls
hit 13 points in a losing cause.
The Panthers captured consolation honors by defeating Le-
moyne College 98-81. The Panther floormen were at their best
for the contest as they put on an outstanding show for the
championship crowd. They completely dominated play and should
have cracked the century mark.
James Walls led all scorers with 29 points followed closely by
Sonny Epps with 22 points.
One of the highlights of the tournament was the naming of
Sonny Epps as Most Valuable Player. Epps had a 19-point
average for the three games. Epps was also named to the All-
Tournament Teams as was James Walls and Anthony Floyd who
played well during the entire tournament.
The Panthers have nowhere to go but up and it will be
tough to contain them next year.
Albert Tinsley will be the only member lost from the starting
five and the Panthers can look forward to a berth in the N.A.I.A.
Tournament next year.
A Look Into the Future
by Wally Smith
A championship team? Maybe! One thing for sure, the Clark
College Panther’s cage team will win a lot of ball games and make
a lot of trouble for its opponents of the SIAC.
The Panthers will lose only one letterman this year and that
is senior guard and playmaker, Albert “Terry” Tinsley. Tinsley,
of course, gave a fine account of himself the past season, averaging
in double figures in points and assists per game.
However, Coach Epps will have many adequate reserves and
lettermen returning to fill the vacancy
left by Tinsley. Among the returnees are
four starters.
James Walls, our top scorer at 18
points per game, will be back and should
exceed his scoring output of the past
season.
Leonidis Epps, III, the second lead
ing scorer and the top rebounder, should
live up to his potentials as being the best
big man in the conference as he proved at
the SIAC tournament.
Anthony Floyd, who found the scor
ing range late during the season, should
continue where he left off and be one of the Panther’s top scorers.
And Charles Byrd, who managed to penetrate the starting
lineup at the guard position, should go on to establish himself
with the best in the conference at that position.
Other members that will be returning are:
Morris Stroud, who is probably the largest, strongest, and
most improved player on the team, should continue to improve
and become one of the top rebounders in the conference.
Tommie Ward, who shoots well for a big man, should be
a consistent performer at one of the forward positions.
Aaron Woodall, a fine ball handler with a fine shot, could
possibly regain the starting position he lost. At any rate, he
will see a lot of action.
Rounding out the returnees are reserves, Clifton Johnson,
Eddie Snowden, and Larry Bolton. Each of these could be con
sistent performers, if given more playing time.
Don’t forget the Freshmen coming in next fall. Coach Epps
has always managed to come up with some fine Freshmen ball
players.
Losing only one starter and having ten returnees is something
a coach dreams of and probably with the talent he has, Coach Epps
will make this dream a reality — a championship team.
Springtime at Clark
With Spring in the air,
thoughts naturally turn to the
outdoor sports of baseball, golf,
and track. But for all practical
purposes those thoughts are
limited to track here at Clark.
The cindermen of Clark com
pleted last season with only one
first place finish in the S.I.A.C.
track meet. Captain Dwight
Ellison captured a first in the
120 yards high hurdles and a
second in the 440 yard hurdles.
In the city meet, Ellison
copped a first in the 440 yard
hurdles. Eugene “Dusty”
Rhodes took a first in the 100
yard dash and the 220 yard
dash. Alphonso Richardson had
a first in the 120 yard high
hurdles.
The 440 relay team of Dwight
Ellison, Eugene Rhodes, Isaac
von Cleveland and Ronald Mc
Donald took a second as did
the mile relay team of Carrell
Smith, Isaac von Cleveland,
Richard Rose and Clift John
son.
Again this year under the
leadership of Dwight Ellison
and Carrell Smith and with most
of the runners returning, the
Panther trackmen are expected
to improve upon last season’s
performance.
Other members included are
Bernard Jones, David Hunter,
Byron Jones, Marvin Harris,
McDuffie Mims, John Bonner,
Lewis Russell and O’Neal
Banks.
Panthers Finish Second
Led by Dwight Ellison, the
Panthers finished second in the
annual City Meet held April 29
at the Washington High track
field.
In the 120 yard high hurdles
Ellison and Alonzo Gleaton fin
ished first and second respect
ively with a time of 14.9. Ellison
also had a third in the broad
jump and high jump.
The mile relay team of Elli
son, Isaac von Cleveland, David
Hunter, and Carrell Smith sur
prised everyone with a first
place finish and a time of
3:23.8. The 440 relay team of
John Boner, Isaac von Cleve
land, David Hunter and Richard
Rose had a second place finish.
In the 440 run, Isaac von
Cleveland and Carrell Smith
finished second and third re
spectively. John Bonner and
Eugene Rhodes finished second
and third in the 100 yard dash,
Rhodes also had a third in the
220 yard run.
In the field events, strongman
Marvin Harris placed first in
the discus and second in the
javelin and shot-put.
Panthers Accept
Invitation to
West Georgia Meet
The cindermen of Clark Col
lege were among the participants
in the West Georgia meet held
at Carrollton, Georgia.
In the 120 yard high hurdles
Dwight Ellison and Alonzo
Gleaton finished first and sec
ond respectively. Ellison was
timed at 15.1. The mile relay
team finished one step behind
Morehouse for third place and
a time of 3:24.7. Marvin Harris
has a first in the javelin with
a toss of 184 feet. Harris also
has a second in the discus.

"Hold on, we are coming." Tommy Hart (extreme left) is being caught up with
by Clark's John Bonner and Eugene Rhodes.
"Easy does it" as Captain Dwight Ellison easily wins the 120 yards high hurdles
in Clark vs. Morris Brown Meet.

Big Time Atlanta
Big time is probably one way
of describing one of America’s
fastest growing and foremost
cities, Atlanta. In the world of
sports, Atlanta has come into
its own within the past two
years.
Atlanta is now the home of
the Braves, who have been
picked to finish in the thick of
the National League Pennant
Race and could possibly bring
the World Series here, the Fal
cons, who kicked off their first
season in the National Football
League and finished with a fine
record for a first year team, and
the Chiefs, who recently opened
their season as a Professional
soccer team.
Possibly by 1970 Atlanta will
be on an equal basis with other
large cjties as a home base for
major professional sports.
