HOMECOMING GAME
Clark Loses to Alabama State
by Rubye Jean Jackson
Homecoming game-was an exciting attire. The parade caused
a spark plug of excitement that set the fire that roared the spirit
that started the game. I am certain the majority of Clarkites
were present to witness the terrific battle between Clark College
Panthers and Alabama State Hornets.
Due to the fact that I do not
have the statistics for the home
coming game I must resort to
writing this paper in a story
form. There comes a time in
every man, woman, or child’s
life when he or she has to face
reality. No matter how we stress
it reality is the only world there
is. I am sure that you would
like to think Clark won the
game but I am afraid the fairy
cannot grant you this wish.
Even our score board is a sym
bol that tells us we must face
it. We lost.
I hope the previous state
ments did not lead you to be
lieve I was sentimental or sad
about the game. If I did then
I am sorry because I am far
from being sentimental or mel
ancholy about our game. Truth
fully speaking I must say Clark
played a good game. I am not
going to waste time baffling over
a batch of “big words” or try
to polish the game. However I
am going to speak in plain and
frank language concerning this.
On Saturday, November 11,
1967 the Clark College Pan
thers and the Alabama State
Hornets met in a jungle. Like
two barbaric tribes they fought
a battle that said only the strong
can survive. This is a jungle
where dog eats dog and mighty
crushes the weak. The chief for
Clark Panthers was Dwight El
lison, an intriguing warrior, with
the mainstreams for his tribe
being Richard Bolton, Richard
Lee, “Suicide,” Eugene Rhodes,
Izear Faigan, Ronald Mclll-
wain, William Peoples, Louis
Russell and Avis Green. The
chief for Alabama State was
Clark Mitchell, with unusual
athletic traits, who was both
cunning and smart. Again due
to the lack of statistics I cannot
name the members of his tribe.
I must admit he had many a
brave warrior.
During our first half this is
where we reached the score-
board. Due to Dwight’s maneuv
ers and his receivers the touch
down was made. Clark had
seven on the scoreboard. Ala
bama State had made several
attempts to score Clark, as she
had done so many other teams,
off the scoreboard with a num
ber like 50-5 in favor of Ala
bama State, but Saturday was
not one of the cases because
Clark did not cease to fight.
Clark College Panthers lost
to Alabama State Hornets but
in this jungle the mighty did not
crush the weak and we did
survive.
COMMENTS FROM THE
EDITOR:
1. Clark lost its homecoming
but Richard Bolton still came
up with the visual interception.
He now leads the team in inter
ceptions at his linebacker post
No. 83. These words came from
Bolton himself.
2. Faigan, the most outstand
ing freshman player, stopped a
number of plays by Alabama
State.
3. Richard Lee of course was
on his P’s and Q’s.
4. “Suicide,” as usual, played
his ruff dive on the SE.
5. There are no words I can
use to describe Dwight’s plays
except W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L.
Speaking of Dwight. Don’t
forget to join us for the next
exciting page of sports. Remem
ber it is not what you have but
how you use it. So long for now.
Tuskegee Big & Wins!
But Bad? — No
Tuskegee Institute’s Golden
Tigers invaded old CC with as
much enthusiasm as had been
expected, but the student body
was ready for them.
This was the one and decid
ing problem we had with Tus
kegee. The students were ready,
hip, black, and angry, but the
team was not. All week long
we worked, studied, and studied
some more. All of which was
not enough. If mistakes were
the name of the game, Clark
would have won with, probably,
a reverse score. But, unfortun
ately, fate does not work that
way and Clark lost to Tuskegee
44-19. This was the worst home
loss since Coach Epps has been
head coach. Incidentally, he
took the blame for the loss. He
said, “We had not properly pre
pared you, and that is all.”
Clark’s scoring went thusly.
Quarterback Dwight Ellison
scored first on a 13 yard scram
ble that thrilled the spectators.
Pro prospect tight end Morris
Stroud scored the other touch
down for the small Panthers.
Henry Earls added one extra
point. At this stage, Tuskegee
jelled and the Panthers were un
able to get another substantial
scoring drive going.
There were one or two bright
spots. Some previously unher
alded linesmen made some good
plays. C. Wyche recovered a
fumble; R. Bolton intercepted
a Tuskegee pass. These are only
two such good plays. I’ll get
you the other guys on Turkey-
Day.

Victory is having final
supremacy in battle
Victory is the rodeo rider
staying in the saddle
Victory is my team winning
ten to nine
Victory is your team being
behind
Victory is my team winning
the Homecoming game
Victory is being able to shout,
holler and act untame
Victory to you may be coming
out on top of the pile
Victory in this sense will only
last a little while
Victory may be this and that,
and all the rest
But to me victory is simply
doing my best.

Savannah State
Takes Clark
On one of the worst days of
the season, in more ways than
one, the Tigers of Savannah
State punched, tackled, ran, and
passed their way to a second half
win over the injured and mis
take-laden Clark College Pan
thers. As Coach Epps described
it, “The worst game we have
played all year.”
The Panthers moved the ball
fairly well for a half, but could
not score. A few scoring oppor
tunities were virtually handed
the hapless gladiators, but a
series of fumbles, missed blocks,
dropped passes, and generally
what is known as “poor play”
prevented our going into the
locker at the half with at least
a one touchdown lead. Savannah
was ready to play Sheep, but we
weren’t ready enough as wolves.
Early in the third period, with
second and short yardage to
go, galloping fullback Eugene
Rhodes burst through Savan
nah’s line on his way to a 71
yard T.D. scramble. This was
one of few times when Clark
looked like the team it is sup
posed to be. We didn’t score
again as Savannah got tougher
and tougher.
Clark's Cheering Pantheretts
Everybody knows that C.C.
is “Where the action is” and
the Cheering Pantherette’s are
“What’s Happening.” Here we
are with a little more force and
lots and lots of action for the
boss school year “67-68.”
The Panthertttes have tra
veled with the football team to
cheer them on to victory in
Knoxville and well. .. Savan
nah.
Basketball season will soon
bring an end to football season
but not to the swinging Panther-
ettes. This year we’re going to
bring something new to Clark
cheerleaders for basketball sea
son. Yes sir! we’re going all the
way.
The Cheering Pantherettes
are Josephine Harris, captain, a
senior from Washington; Jackie
Jackson, co-captain, a sopho
more, from Atlanta; Elaine
Turner, Linda Jones, Mary
Steverson and Anna Laura Mc
Gee, all sophomores from At
lanta; Lizzette Jones, Janice
Eley and Mattie Heard, all
freshmen from Atlanta and of
course Mike Montford and
Robert Moody, the Panther.
A Look Into the Sports World
by Rubye Jean Jackson
This is the kind of activity that takes root in the heart and
grows there for a lifetime. Here the spirits of all nations have met
in a circle that enfigures deep human wisdom with a rich and
colorful imagination. In my opinion sports reminds me of a story.
In fact it is a story. It is the story of a long quest in search of the
ultimate answer to the riddle of man’s role on this earth.
As young men and women of this world there must be a con
tentment somewhere or somehow with this role of sports. The
road to sports is a tortuous road that carries man through the
sensuality of a love affair with the beauty
of a touchdown, or the dump of basket
ball, or the hurdling of a hurdler, the
points made by a golf player, the playing
of polo, etc. Sports is as beautiful as any
Egyptian queen, to be truthful about the
matter sports could be considered the
eighth wonder of the world. The tempta
tion of athletics and its success is the
heartache of a struggle with the desire
to achieve masculinity in the sports world.
Sports is a wonderful thing and it
doesn’t take a lot of know-how to under
stand it. It is quite an experience for a
little boy to go to a baseball game with
his Daddy. Even a child of this age is able to comprehend the
meaning of sports. The appealment of sports is to ages. From
the little boy of six to the old lady of sixty sports is a terrible
thing.
With the many threats of war man is constantly seeking a way
out. This is a way in which he feels that he has to get away from
it all. This world of conflict, industrial expansion, and material
progress is one in which cynics thrive and realists adjust without
difficulty; but what about the common man—what is he supposed
to do? He has to find a way in which he can relax and feel at
ease. This way is sports. As I said before, sports is a terrible
thing. Like candy soothes a child’s appetite, sports soothes a
persons’ need to be drawn into another world. Please. Don’t
misconstrue my meaning when I say another world. Sports is
very much a part of reality. In fact it is so much a part until
I place it into a world of its own.
Sports is indeed looked upon in my eye as the major activity
of this mod, mod world. Athletes have always had a place in
society no matter what role was being played. The sport world
is one that everyone goes for, therefore my biggest suggestion
to you would be go sports!!!!!!
I have tried to tell a simple, straightforward story, with no
attempt at embellishment. My regret is that what I have attempted
to do has been dope so imperfectly. The greater part of my time
is spent by getting the games together. Much of what I have
said has been said before, only not in these same words. The last
thing that I would like to say is—being a part of the sports world
is a wonderful thing.
