My Reflections As A Graduating Senior
As I look over my period of
stay at Clark, the dark sha
dows prevail over the light sha
dows. The situation at hand
troubles and bewilders me be
cause these cancerous shadows
are demolishing and destroying
this institution or whatever it is
supposed to represnt. I thought
or believed this institution
known as Clark College rep
resented culture for service and
second to none.
Ladies and gentlemen, alum
ni and fellow students alike, if
you believe this is supported
and represented in that way
you are greatly mistaken. I am
tired of hearing and seeing peo
ple receiving laud, praise and
awards for something of which
they are unworthy. The people
do not merit praise; they merit
ridicule and shame. Yes,
shame, because people I write
not to praise but to bury these
glory hawks and cut throats of
these misinformed people. I
know you good and unfortunate
students do not have the slight
est idea about what I am say
ing.
The situation is as follows:
Stella Brewer Brookes, 1924—
AB Wiley College, AM Uni
versity of Michigan, PhD Cor
nell University. I see her cre
dentials in the Clark College
Cataloge 1967-68 and I do not
need to hear this in a class in
structed by her. I do not think
that this is part of English Lit
erature nor is her idiosynchro-
sies part of English literature,
what I should hear is the allego
rical and other literary prowess
which will help me further my
education. I do not need to
be told that I am on the wrong
side of the hall by Mrs. S. B.
Brooks, a traffic director for
Clark College instead of a De
partment head of English _for
Clark College.
Are we as students supposed
to be judged on one grade or
on previous grades like op the
dean’s list or not on the dean’s
list. Are we not supposed to
have a fair chance to improve
from average grade to a higher
evaluation or are we supposed
to be stabbed in the back by
these imitators who consider
themselves as teachers of com
municative skills.
Dr. Brookes can speak well,
I quote, “I graduated from Cor
nell and you are too dumb and
stupid to talk to me; therefore,
shut up” unquote, you are bit
ter in the class room, the of
fice, the corridors. Where is
this extending hand of culture
for service that I paid for to
the Business Office of Clark
College?
Yes, I am tired of these peo
ple like Brookes betraying you
and especially me. Why I see
her ettiquette acquired from
her formal education where Dr.
Samuel Proctor, Speaker of
Clark’s 98th Founder Days
Program, stated or made a sa
tirical attack upon the English
and Math Department and any
other department who thought
they are so great and mighty.
Why Dr. Brookes, Mrs. Willie
Davis, Mrs. Murphy, Dr. Den
nis, Mr. Clifton, Mr. Hall, Mrs.
Harris, Mrs. Robinson, Miss
D’souza, Mrs. Gillespie, Mr.
Black and Mrs. Jackson look
for holes in the floor to climb
in and hide their shameful
souls. In all of my life this is
the first time I have witnessed
such shameful behavior of so-
called Eurdite scholars.
Mr. L. S. Epps spoke at
awards assembly just two
weeks after this shameful in
cident. He spoke the same way
as Dr. Proctor, this time Dr.
Brookes leaves in the middle
of his speech. You see this is
her grace and etiquette. She is
a self glory seeker, selfish, tak
ing care of English minors and
majors only and some of the
dean’s listers. I talked about
her because she has been here
longer but Mrs. Willie C. Davis
talked to me in her office for
13 % minutes in a 15 minute
office conference I commented
iy 2 minutes and she stopped
me. She had the audacity to
tell me she did not have time
because she wants to go to
chapel.
I could never find time to
talk anymore to Mrs. Willie
C. Davis. She was always busy
or was never in but now I
see her and she smiles. You
know I stood up and watched
Mrs. W. C. Davis and Mrs.
Harris converse lollergaging
and wasting time in the corri
dor of Haven Warren Hall for
45 minutes. You know it puz
zles me how they had so much
time to pass away talking and
no time to have a conference.
People like this need not be
here; they should either shape
up or ship out. The rest of the
English Department in persons
like Mr. William L. Dutch an
unsuccessful candidate for a
Doctor’s degree in English,
Mrs. Gillespie, Mrs. Murphy,
Miss Fields and others too
busy cutting each others throats
trying to get Dr. Brookes’ po
sition rather than teach Eng
lish. In some cases others are
incompetent and cannot teach
English or anything else.
Mr. Hall and Mrs. Clifton in
the math department know
math but are too interested in
becoming department heads af
ter Dr. Dennis. They are noth
ing but professional rodents
and cheese eaters. Mrs. Harris
and Mrs. Robinson do not
know math. Maybe they need
to be housewives or enter an
other profession.
I talked to several of my
fellow students about this and
they agree wholeheartedly but
are unable to speak out be
cause they are afraid of getting
sucked out of school. This
should not be why I thought
I was a free man in liberation
but I am in a state of quasi-in
concentration or imprisonment.
That’s right by people who
think they are extending serv
ice to themselves without signs
of refined culture.
You people have students
afraid of you because you carry
and conduct yourselves with
actions synonymous with Bull
Connor, Orval E. Faubus, Les
ter Maddox. These people have
incarcerated us with fear by
By Drajah Morrow
subversive means in order for
you to gain your selfish evil
ends.
Just you people remember
this is no Athenian or Roman
society! in other words, you are
not gods and goddesses. You
find time to talk with us, to
listen and help work out diffi
culties because that is why you
are paid. You good people will
be caught in the long run be
cause you will have to answer
to your Jesus. Yes, Jesus, be
cause this is supposed to be a
Christian institution but is in
fested with sinners and evil
doers.
Why, Rev. Dr. Brawley was
the worst individual I could
see as a college president be
cause he desired nothing of
students like the athlete. The
only time he projected these
thoughts was the time he asked
for the ball from the Morehouse
game. This was selfish greed
and self glorification. Everyone
certainly hated to see him go,
but I was not. As far as I was
concerned he stayed too long
and they should not even have
made him president emeritus.
They just should have let him
fall by the wayside because he
has simply played out this time.
The Mr. Dr. Vivian W. Hen
derson is a better example of
a president because he desires
total participation for all stu
dents regardless of academic
status namely dean’s list or
not. He accepts conferences
with all students, regardless of
academic status, dean’s list or
not. He accepts conferences
with all students, why it was
only yesterday that I was in
his office, when he saw the stu
dent namely me and should
speak out and be heard. There
fore I speak and I do not in
tend to be heard, because I was
struck for words when in his
office for the first time in my
lifetime. It is so spacious and
he is busy but not busy enough
to see about the student needs
or desires.
We as a group of students
are alarmed at the thought of
higher income of school next
year and a loss in our accredi
tation. I don’t think we would
be aware of this situation with
out our illustrious President. I
don’t think our past president
would have been fair enough to
let us know but instead hide it
among the so-called dignitaries,
heads of departments and the
Board of Trustee members.
The athletic department is
getting more recognition in his
reign as president than my one
year under Brawley as presi
dent. This is culture for service
not self-glorification. Can’t you
selfish people view yourself in
the mirror of time with live
lihood of evil. The business of
fice in the name of Mr. Wil
liam Morrell, Mr. Ray Bolton,
Mr. Joe Ross and Mrs. Stand
ard, not Miss Hansford and Mr.
Wiliams are taking more money
every day and giving none
back. They just take savagely
without explanation or redress
courtesy and are nothing but
legalized tycoons, robbers, bar
ons and phonies. I hate for
people to go in the business
office with money because I
can see dollar signs in almost
everyone’s eyes as if they are
human adding machines and
cash registers.
May I take the time to for
mally introduce myself. Drajah
Morrow, a resident on Clark
College Campus specifically in
Brawley Hall, Room No. 236
and if there is anything said in
this article that disturbs you
please feel free to call. Take
special note not to bother any
one else except me because this
is all my doing.
You people say Dr. Brantley
is going to get his cut of the
lazy niggers who call students
but really ain’t doing nothing.
Well Dr. Brantley was just
doing his job as registrar—ac
cepting, rejecting, admitting,
and dismissing. You teachers
are the ones doing the cutting;
yes, you are the culprits that
are going to get your cut and
not Dr. Brantley. Why, Dr.
Brantley gave me something
that I treasure—the key to my
success and that is get per
sonal: use I and not we, take
advice from the person or per
sons who pay your bills, buy
your food, and clothes. Other
than that don’t pay them any
attention.
I certainly don’t appreciate
any Freshman (namely Ruby
Jackson) writing an article
about sports, name a fine speci
men of a man and a day at the
desk with Coach Epps because
she is too narrow and shallow
minded to see that Sonny Epps
is not the only fine specimen of
a man in the athletic depart
ment nor is he the only senior.
There is Raymond Ruffin, Wal
ter Burden, William Peoples,
Richard Lee, Richard Bolton,
Dwight Ellson, Eugene Rhodes,
Charles William and Drajah
Morrow who are seniors. These
are not the only athletes, just
seniors, but I believe that every
man in the athletic department
is a fine specimen of a man.
I believe the Coach Epps in
his article interview was not
solely on basketball at least not
in the public eye. If so, I think
that an athletic director should
remember that he has had no
basketball team of any signifi
cance since the days of 1964-
65 with Rozelle Poignard, Reg
inald Gardner, Paul Robinson,
Samuel Brown, Ronald Jack-
son, Ronald Faganan and Craig
Morgan. They were the cham
pion of the SIAC conference,
not Sonny Epps and the new
reign of round ball stars.
I think our great coach and
athletic director is too concern
ed over basketball and hair and
I think he should put more at
tention on tennis, track and
field, baseball and football. I
think that more praise and
credit should be given to Mr.
Jesse McClardy, Mr. Lowell
Dickerson, Mr. Curtis Crock
ett, Mr. Leroy Hambush be
cause they are the ones who
work hardest with the athletic
department.
Speaking about athletes and
the athletic department, I
would like to point out to you
that these people contribute
more to this institution than
any other organization at this
institution. There are too many
people and too many trips
made in defense of this school’s
slogan, second to none, culture
for service. I don’t give a damn
about the treatmentthat I am
receiving from the teachers and
students who call me an old
dumb, stupid athlete. That we
are lazy no good students and
you can not let them get by in
your class with murder even
though you are the worst mur
derer yourself. Yes, you the
teacher, with the exception of
Dr. Pearlie C. Dove, Miss Re
becca E. Davies, Miss Rebye
B. Dooley and Dr. Dennis.
I don’t give a damn about
people who want me to work
as a common janitor and let
students who don’t do as much
as we do have the nice office
jobs in the dorms, etc. I don’t
like coach Epps pestering me
about trips to this because he
should help us out of job like
this and get us a better one.
I don’t appreciate the ath
letic department living in a flea
boy and rat trap lean to at 117
Chestnut St., S.W. I don’t give
a damn about Coach Epps tell
ing me book first and sports
second, however, he only sees
you during sports and leaves
little or no time for books. He
works every minute running
errands, clean this clean that,
intimidation and harrassment
here and there.
I don’t like people talking
language to one with the smell
of hog and cow manure be
cause I am a student, not only
an athlete. Why did I got out
of here in three and one half
years?
We have other athletes here
at Clark who graduated from
Clark. And they are as follows:
Dr. Carson Lee, Mr. Joe Louis
Tucker, Mr. Frank Edwards,
Mr. Averretta Burress, Mr.
Lowell Dickerson, Mr. Curtis
Crockett, Mr. Leroy Ham-
brick, and Mr. Jesse S. Mc
Clardy who are all graduates of
Clark College and you teachers
called them old dumb stupid
athletes. Now just look at your
self and see if you can stomach
the ill looking selfish greedy
and crooked self.
In spite of all that I have
said about Coach Epps I have
to^express my thanks and sin
cere appreciation for him giv
ing this opportunity to gain a
college degree. I give special
thanks and appreciation and
respect to Mr. Jessie S. Mc
Clardy.
I don’t think we as an insti
tution are ready to have an ob
servance of a centennial cele
bration because we are a sick
bunch of Mad educated people.
We must do away with these
cancerous people like Dr. Den
nis and Coach Epps and their
Hair Philosophy, Dr. Brooks
and her cut throats in the Eng
lish department, Dr. Dennis
