Clark Battles to Tie MBC 19-19
BY BRUCE FLETCHER
The Annual Clark College
vs Morris Brown College
Thanksgiving day classic
battled to a 19-19 tie.
The scene was at the At
lanta Stadmm, the rivalry
being the oldest for Black
Colleges in the nation. The
game was played with many
penalties for both teams.
Morris Brown scored first
with a 40 yard field goal,
and lead the Panthers by
3-0 at the first quarter end.
In the second quarter Mor
ris Brown struck again on a
62 yard touchdown pass and
had a comfortable 10-0 lead
for a while but the Clark
Panthers must never be
under estimated. They
came right back with a 32
yard touchdown pass from
Chalres Turner to John Po
wers, but the extra point
failed. At halftime the score
was 10-6 Morris Brown.
In the second half Mor
ris Brown drove down the
field and scored with a 27
yard field goal, and took a
13-6 lead midway through
the3rd quarter. Late in the
3rd quarter Morris Brown
had Clark’s back to the end
zone, with the ball on the
1 yard line and a 4th down
and 12 punting situation. The
punt was returned by Wil
lie Smith for a 48 yard
touchdown. Which put Mor
ris Brown ahead 19-6 (The
extra point failed). The Pan
thers moved into the 4th
quarter trailing 19-6. Clark
opened up the game after a
long drive down to the Mor
ris Brown 2 yard line where
Bobby Sumlin smashed ov
er for a touchdown. The
extra point was good. With
the score 19-13, Clark’s de
fense got stronger and stron
ger as the game went on,
stopping drives, knocking -
down passes, etc, and gave
the offense something to
work with.
Morris Brown wanted to
protect their lead and show
ed it by stopping Clark
twice within the 10 yard
line of Morris Brown ter
ritory with 4th down situa
tions. Finally on the 3rd
drive within the Morris
Brown 10, Charles Turner
rolled out to the right with
a 4th and goal to go, and hit
Gregory McCrary with a
4 yard touchdown pass to
tie the game 19-19. The
extra point try which would
have been the difference be
tween a win and a tie was
blocked. And left the Pan
thers with a 19-19 tie. With
the Thanksgiving day clas
sic being the last game of the
year. Clarks record is 4-3-1
With a second place finish
in our division.

Panthers Predict
A Better Season
By VERNARD HOWARD
The basketball team of
Clark College expects to
lave a good season this
/ear. They had many pro-
ilems last year, finishing
:he season with a 10-13
record. But they are de
termined to have a better
season this year.
Coach Leonidas Epps,
head basketball coach, said
all of the players have been
working hard. “We lost only
one player off last year’s
team so we should have a
team returning with some
experience,” Epps said
“This should be a great
asset to the team.” Coach
Epps also said the fresh
men players, Michael Pe
terson, Blair Thomas and
Gary Kimbrough will con
tribute a lot to the team
during their years at Clark.
According to Coach Epps,
the team can be better and
it will be improving in the
years to come.
The basketball team is
young and consists of three
freshmen, eight sophmores
and four juniors. But the
Panthers can have a win
ning season if every Clar-
kite supports them.

CC WOMEN TAKE TO THE COURT
By BRENDA L. CAMP
Women have been steadily
advancing here at Clark,
with a recently-appointed-
lady dean, a female SGA
president, a women’s group
that makes things happen.
Our latest addition to this
burgeoning list is a girls’
basketball team.
The team started out as
a one-time affair. They were
slated to play against Spel-
man for a benefit. But the
girls’ coach, Kelly Camp
bell, thought the team should
be permanent.
Kelly, a junior from Mi
ami, Fla., got help from
the Athletic Department and
the SGA.
As for enthusiasm, a
large number of Clarkites
turned out for Clark -Spel-
man benefit game. It was
joy to see the men of Clark
applaud their female coun
terpart.
Kelly said they pick up
games as “they go along.”
“I’m trying to see if we can
play before the boys’ bas
ketball games, then we can
schedule something,” he
said.
The team’s co-captains
are Carolyn King, a fresh
man, and Patricia Holt, a
sophomore.
Incidentally, the girls
won the benefit game, but
lost the first game to the
Women’s City League.

Carolyn King scored 20
points to help the Clark
women’s Basketball team to
a smashing 33-28 win over
the Spelman Basketball
team. The game was play
ed in Spelman’s gym Satur
day November 17, at 8:00
The Spelman team had a
11-5 margin at one time in
the game, but with the steady
defense (lead by Faye Ware
and Carmen Bradford) the
Clark women surged to a
11-11 halftime score. In the
second half the Clark women
showed great defense with
Faye Ware and Carmen
Bradford in the middle post,
intimidating the constantly
pulling down rebound af
ter rebound. The rebounds
were fed to Pat Holt and
fed to Carolyn King. This
combination pulled Clark-
from a would be 25 to 20
deficit to a 33 to 28 vic
tory. Carolyn King scored
12 of her 20 points in the
second half. The starting
lineup was: Brenda Gideon
34, Linda Walters, 33, Pat
Holt, 10, Carolyn King 1,
Faye Ware 5.

Take Heed
Tuition for the year 1974-
1975 will be $2910.30 for
resident students and $1785
30 for non-residents.
This is nearly a $300 in
crease over this year’s aca
demic costs. For that much
money, let’s hope we see
some marked improvements
very soon. (Check the Feb
ruary issue of “The Pan
ther” for a closer look at
the issue).
