Education Of Sonny Carson
Depicts Genocide Scheme
By Arlene Riley
A Review
Sonny Carson is a typi
cal Black “americanboy,”
who finds out that America
is definitely not structured
to serve the interests of
Black people.
“The Education of Sonny
Carson,’’ is a film based on
the story of the true to life
character, Robert “Sonny’’
Carson. The picture basi
cally deals with a Black
child, Sonny, growing up in
white America.
Sonny Carson, played by
Rony Clinton, spent the
largest part of his life
fighting the system. Even
from youth, Sonny realized
to some degree that
Blacks, particularly in his
community, were being op
pressed and brutalized by a
common enemy. But the
question is, who was that
enemy?
Was the enemy the
Hawks, who were the rival
gang of the Lords (the gang
of which Sonny was a
member), or was it the
system, who drove Blacks
to this deadly game of kil
ling, fighting and hating
one another?
Was the enemy the po
lice force, or was it the
whole establishment that
the police force represent
ed?
Maybe the enemy was the
drugs, or was it the pusher
of the drugs, or better yet,"
was it the “man” who
pushed, passed, drove and
spread the drugs into the
Black community? Who
was, and who is, the
enemy?
Who was, and who is, the
enemy who stabbed littl ’
boy in the back? Was it the
Lords, or was it the
man(?) Who killed the littl’
boy?
Who was, and who is, the
enemy who murdered
Brother Willie in the pris
on camp? Was it one of his
inmates, was it suicide, or
was it one of ‘dem white
faggut guards; the protec
tors of America, our lib
erty and security force.
“Willie, Willie, don’t leave
me man, don’t leave me:
Will...ie.”
Sonny Carson was an ex
cellent picture of NOW. We
can characterize it as total
genocide, which is the sys
tematic killing of a race of
people. Nevertheless,
whatever it was, it was
wiping out Black people.
“The Education of Sonny
Carson,” was not just a
movie directed filmed and I
produced to entertain us;
but it was, in actuality,
a nightmare. “The Educa
tion of Sonny Carson,”
wasn’t just a horrible
“flick” thought up and
schemed up to scare us
half out of our minds, the
movie was true.
How depressing, how hu
miliating, how REAL. . .
Rufus Bombs Out
Stevie Turns
Omni Out
BY LOIS E. HARRINGTON
It seemed all efforts
were in vain as Rufus tried
to arouse a most unrespon
sive audience at the Omni,
on Oct. 6. Chaka Khan, lead
vo calist with Rufus, bump -
ed and grinded her way
through another hellified
performance.
The poor acoustics were
a familiar part of the Rufus
show to those members of
the audience who attended
the Sept. 8 show when they
were billed with the O’Jays.
“Tell Me Something
Good” and Rufus’ new hit
single, “You Got the Love”,
managed to set some folks
jamming as late comers
dribbled in.
But when Stevie Wonder
hit the stage, with harmoni-,
ca in hand, everybody is up
and screaming.
Stevie moved from his
latest platinum album,
“Fullfillingness’ First Fi
nale,” to an old, gold sin
gle, “Signed, Sealed and
Delivered.”
Stevie Wonder is beauti
ful; he’s full of love,
warmth and truth. And he’ll
also politely tell you to be
quiet while he’s rapping.
He raps about love and
people, and he writes about
life, which he summed up in
a tune called “Innervi-
sions.”
Dig this, Stevie had the
audience getting off on
some bad jives. When he
got into “Boogie on Reggae
Women,” the song got so
bad even Stevie got up from
his organ and bumped With
one of the Wonderloves
(three female volcalists
who back him). I mean peo
ple the man got down with
the bump!
A word about the Won-
derlove BAND. The down
right, superbaaad musi
cians who make up Stevie’s
band include: David Myles
on guitar, Nathan Watts on
bass, Raymond Pounds on
drums and Michael Stanton
on keyboards. They really
get down. And the three sis
ters, Wonderloves,
dressed in their slinky,
black garbs added to the
“feelgood” feeling, Oct. 6.
