Committee focuses on Clark’s student life.
SLC Tackles Student
By Ronald Cain
The Clark College Stu-
ent Life Committee is off
to a running start by mak
ing major decisions that
could possibly lead to the
elimination of many prob
lems now faced by stu
dents.
The committee consists
of 26 members including
faculty, staff, and three
representatives from each
of the different classes.
Heading the Student Life
Committee is headed by
Mrs. Amaryliss M. Hawk
as chairman with Sherri
Garrett as assistant sec
retary. Some of the mem
bers of the SLC included
Curtis Gillispe, Dean of
Students; Mr s. Edith Thom -
as, Dean of Women; Robert
Lee, Assistant to dean of
students; and Andrew
Stephen; President of SGA.
Problems
In their meeting at noon
on October 2, 1974 Dean
Curtis Gillispie presented
the purposes and functions
of the Student Life Com-
mitte (SLC). Dean Gillis
pie stated that the prim
ary purpose of the SLC is
to work with the needs, in
terest and problems of the
students.
Also the SLC will serve
as a liasion between stu
dents and faculty, students
and the administration, and
also students and students.
It will be a policy making
body for non-academic
problems, while aslo mak
ing policies and recom
mendations on matters
concermng academic a-
reas. Among these prob
lems are the food in the
dining hall, repairs in
dorms, drugs and alcohol,
student lounge, library,
faculty, dress, preg
nancies in the dorms, and
the rights and freedoms
of student.
The concern of co-edu-
cational visitation was in
the spotlight of the SLC
and the old guidelines are
now under new evaluation.
Co-ed visitation will take
place for one month under
the old guidelines on a
trial basis as soon as 100%
(percent) cooperation of
signatures is achieved. At
the end of the month final
guidelines will be drawn up
taking into consideration
the evaluations of that
month.
Committee have also
been formed to help with
other problems such as
the committee for Co-ed
Visitation, Awards, Cam-
pus bookstore, Cafeteria,
Communications, Dormi-
Registration
and Financial Aid.
Moving in the right di
rection the SLC appears
to be sincerely trying to
eliminate the pains of
campus living man stu
dents feel.
Greeks On
By Brenda L. Camp
Greek fraternal organi
zations have historically,
complemented and aug
mented the black college
campus and provided a
refuge for isolated blacks
on white campuses.
The oldest black Greek-
letter fraternity, Alpha Phi
Alpha, was founded by
black scholars who wanted
a literary club. When pre
sented the pressing pro
blems fellow black students
faced concerned employ
ment and meeting financial
obligations, the founders
expanded the concept to
include a self-help stipula
tion.
With the founding of Al
pha Phi Alpha, other
blacks formed Greek -
letter organizations. O
mega Psi Phi and a soroi
ity, Alpha Kappa Alpha,
soon followed suit.
Clark College has a
number of fraternities and
sororities. There are also
Greek-letter societies that
are not considered fratern
ities.
In addition to Alpha Phi
Alpha and Omega Psi Phi,
ties include Phi Beta
Sigma and Kappa Alpha
Psi.
The Rise
Sororities are Alpha
Kappa Alpha, Zeta Phi
Beta, Delta Sigma Theta,
and Sigma Gamma Rho.
Alpha Phi Omega, dub
bed a service fraternity,
has been seeking a revival
on campus.
Two recently-organized
groups .on campus bear one
Greek letter in their ap
pellations. Groove Phi
Groove and its sister,
Swing Phi Swing, are
called social organiza
tions.
In addition to these
Greeks are the honor soie-
ties: Alpha Kappa Mu, Beta
Kappa Chi, Pi Delta Phi
and Alpha Kappa Delta.
On black and white col
lege campuses throughout
the country, there has
been a notable increase ir.
the Greek ranks. A popular
reason for the upsurge of
Greek interest is the ab
sence of a protest cause.
Greek-lettered organi
zations will become a focal
point on this campus for
the next month or so.
This is the traditional
“pledge” period, when
prospective members pass
or fail requirements for
initiation.
