St* *Jmi CmcJt. iL -AUC By Benita McShan Culture, Community and Service are Clark College mottoes, but how many Clarkites take their maxim seriously? Clark Students had a chance to become more involved with Atlanta through this fall’s elections. But most Clark students, and students from throughout the Atlanta University Center in general, did not. Most students were not concerned enough to even check the candidates out. Tyrone L. Brooks, national communications director for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and a campaign worker for mayoral candidate Emma Darnell said, “Political apathy on black campuses is a big problem. We only had about five to 10 students working for us. They were all from Clark College.” Brooks pointed to politicians who forget their campaign promises once they are elected as the main cause of voter apathy. “Surprisingly,” he said, “students have not been very active in any of the other campaigns.” “If people do not see concrete gains from their ef forts, they loose interest,” said Brooks. Ronny Jones, student coordinator for Maynard Jackson’s re-election campaign had to deal with many of the voter apathy problems facing other campaigns. There were approximately 25 students involved with the mayor’s re- election campaign as opposed to more than 1,000 students who worked to get Jackson elected during the last election. “Students generated critical manpower and the campaign could not have run as smoothly without them,” said Jones, a Morehouse senior. “This was not as hot an election as the last election was and the issues have not been as clear cut. Students did a little bit of everything to keep the campaign going. They have taken a real interest in working for the mayor and the com munity.” As student coordinator for the campaign, Jones was responsible for coordinating the Atlanta University Students, George Institute of Technology and Georgia State students for Jackson’s Campaign. “The Center schools begin sessions earlier than Georgia Tech or Georgia State,” said Jones, “So we have been more active in the campaign than other students.” Materialism: It Can Destroy You I feel that it is time we direct our attention to the serious problem of materialism. It is defined as a doctrine, theory, or principle ac cording to which the highest values or objectives of living lie in material well-being. The only pleasure that a materialistic person has is the furtherance of material progress. In America, a person is generally characterized by “how much he had of this, or how much she has of that.” Many of us find it difficult to be at peace with ourselves because of the constant pressure that is thrust upon us by the mass media to buy a certain cosmetic to refresh ourselves in the morning. They say use Right Guard or Sure deodorant to be able to cope with the pressures during mid-day working hours, and purchase a comfortable new automobile that will enable us to relax during the hectic rush hour traffic on the journey home. This package includes AM-FM stereo since few people would obtain a new automobile without such conveniences. The messages must be working because advertisers are spen ding billions of dollars each year to publicize their various products. The way the media publicizes such items as these, and the rapid pace in which America swallow up this merchandise, it makes most of us feel that if we don’t follow the pattern something is wrong with us. Through it is true that everyone enjoys and desires nice objects, it is also true that if we don’t control our materialistic appetite, it can end up controlling us and eventually destroying us. Rex Bennett Cochran Lashes KKK By Nedra Powell Buddy Cochran, the man accused of driving his car through a crowd of spectators and smashing into the speaker’s podium at a Ku Klux Klan rally in Plains, Ga., in July, has been released on $50,000 bond and is drumming up mass support from individuals and organizations around the country. Cochran was on Clark’s campus recently seeking support from students and the surrounding community. Cochran said his main concern now is to help op pressed blacks. “I’m tired of everybody coming down on blacks. We’re all fighting for the same things, equal rights.” The primary plan Cochran has in mind to help liberate blacks is the abolition of the KKK. He is seeing support from the National Worker’s Organization, Revolutionary Student Brigade, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Mass rallies are scheduled for Oct. 15 at the state capital in Atlanta and in Columbus, Ohio. Cochran said he hopes these mass support rallies will help influence authorities to drop the charges against him, and build up public support for his proposal of abolishing the KKK.
