Page 5 THE PANTHER OCTOBER 4, 1979 Students Speak Out By Jerome Gwinn and David Thomas Panther Staff Writers With the impromptu resignation of former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young, much controversy has been going to as to why he resigned. To explore and highlight some of the possible reasons as to why a black man holding one of the more powerful international positions would resign, students of the AUC community were interviewed to voice their opinion of the situation. Deborah Hutchinson, a senior majoring in Journalism at Clark Cpllege and an Atlanta native: , think Andy Young’s resignation was a good thing. One reason is that he is not a passive person and the position is one where he has to be passive. Young was to outspoken. I believe he has more political clout now, as a result of resigning. He can virtually go anywhere in the U.S. and get some sort of political position. Resigning seems to have been a catalyst for his future political career.” Clarence Johnson, a senior at Clark majoring in Political Science; hometown Atlanta: “I think Andrew Young’s resignation was possibly forced. . .I’m not sure if the State Department did not secretly authorize meetings with the PLO. However, An drew Young’s intention were for the best interest of coun try’s and he should not be chastized.” Campus Quotes will be a regular feature in the Panther. Brenda Gates, a junior at Clark College majoring in Public Relation; hometown Atlanta; “I feel hewas really forced out of office, he was do ing what he thought was best, and not what they wanted him to do. . .1 think his replacement, Mr. Donald McHenry, is the type they want.” Phillippe Holsey, a junior majoring in Economicsat Morehouse; hometown Washington, DC: “I think because of his efforts in the Middle East and in world diplomacy, he has gained wide credibility. His resignation is definitely a loss to the Carter Administration. Young converted a virtually powerless office into one of considerable influence.” Franzelle Mathis, a senior majoring in drama at Clark from Tifton, GA.: “At first I was aginst Andrew Young’s resignation because of his position in the White House. However, he must have had personal and political reasons for doing so.. .Maybe he could deal with the pressure, but didn’t want to. I feel his personal reasons justify his resigning.”
