For one quarter the 50th an
nual Thanksgiving Day Clas
sic football game pitting arch
rivals Clark against Morris
Brown was everything the
fans thought it would be-
emotional, exciting, and close.
But when the Panthers wentto
sleep and the Wolverines woke
up the score was anything but
close, as Morris Brown routed
Clark 19-20.
With both schools having
lost to Morehouse, this game
between the two rivals was the
first time it didn’t determine
the Atlanta University Center
champion. But the fact an
AGO championship wasn’t at
stake didn’t minimize its im
portance.
Playing before a crowd of 9,-
050 at Herndon Stadium, the
Wolverines Cecil Williams
opened the scoring as he
galloped seven yards for a
touchdown midway through
the first quarter.
The Panthers closed the gap
as reserve quarterback Jeff
Merritt scored on a 1-yard run
with one second remaining in
the quarter as Brown lead 7-6.
Things did look somewhat
bright for Clark entering the
second quarter after all they*
had held the Southern
Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference lead rusher Cecil
Williams to a mere 30 yards on
nine carries, and the talented
freshman quarterback
Fernanda Burgess had only
completed 1 of 7 passes. But
when it rains on Clark it
usually pours; and flood it did
as the Panthers had a disas
trous quarter.
The ambidextrous Burgess
who was contained in the
opening quarter was highly
instrumental in the second
quarter as Morris Brown
scored four touchdownstwo
within eight seconds. The
Wolverine quarterback started
the flood as he hit wide receiver
Billy Reaves on 71-yard Tl)
strike.
On the kickoff following the
touchdown a Panther return
man watched a Morris Brown
player recover the ball at the
Clark’s 19 yard line, then the
Wolverines Warren Moon
scored on the following play,
the first of his three
touchdowns as he went in from
17 yards.
Morris Brown later came
hack down the field to score on
a 74-vard touchdown pass
from Burgess to Mike Scott,
and Warren Moon capped the
scoring for the first half as he
went in from 18-yards giving
Morris Brown a commanding
33-6 lead.
In the third quarter Warren
Moon scored his third
touchdown of the game on 2
yard run. and Wolverine bac
kup quarterback Anthony Ray
Mills teamed up with Billy
Reaves on a. 50 yard
touchdown pass his second of
the game.
The Panthers made a
gallant effort to come back as
they scored on runs of 8 and 6
yards respective bv Johnnie
Millen and Simeon Kelly.
Morris Brown who now
leads the series 34-10-6 finishes
the season at 6-5 while Clark
ends up 2-5-1.
