Jamaican Journalist Lectures At Clark

Wentworth Errol Bowen, a
Phelps-Stokes scholar from
Kingston, Jamaica was recently a
guest lecturer at Clark College.
The Phelps-Stokes Scholar
Program is an exchange program
which involvesscholarsprimarily
from carribean countries, and
scholars from black colleges in
the United States.
This exchange program selects
two participants from the U.S.
and each carribean country,
sends them to the United States
or the carribean from the U.S. for
one week of residency on cam
pus, followed by a week long
seminar.
The theme for this particular
exchange program is "The
Promotion of Regional Values
and Strength Which Reflect Exis
ting Realities and Future
Prospects."
During his week long visit at
Clark College, Bowen lectured
on the history, economy, and
social structure of Jamaica. He
also gave a special lecture on the
‘‘Rastafarian Religion which is an
indigenous Jamaican religion
that began in the 1930’s.
Bowen began his career first as
a Biology and Chemistry instruc
tor on the secondary level in St.
Kitts, Jamaica. His interest for
journalism became highly
favorable when he began tosub-
mit his free-lance articles to a
newspaper in St. Kitts, Jamaica.
Bowen has an extensive
background in several areas of
the media. He is currently a
columnist for The Jamaican Daily
News. In his column he em
phasises a Political Analysis in
Jamaica. He is currently
publications editor, at the (ISER)
Institute of Social & Economic
Research, University of West In
dies (UWI).
Before joining the staff at UWI,
he was a feature writer and
photographer for The Jamaican
Daily News. He had also written
for various Jamaican magazines,
such as, The Savacon and the
Xaymaca. At present, he is a full
time instructor at the Carribean
Institute of Mass Com
munications, UWI.
"There are approximately 120
students in Mass Com
munications at the institute,” he
sa id.
According to Bowen, the
difference between the mass
communications program df
UWI and Clark College is that
they do not have their own radio
station, but they do have a
university radio unit. The
university hires a person who
works with the students in the
radio unit.
The students in their
journalism department produce
a student newspaper entitled
Wentworth Errol Bowen, of Kingston, Jamaica, extends his

Scope, and the other students
produce a university publication
entitled Carribean Journalist
which is published only once a
term. UWI has a total of only
three terms.
Bowen mentioned that UWI
offers attachment programs to its
students. Thein particular
programs are similar to Clark
College's internship programs. If
a student is selected to
participate in the program he
will have to go to various media
most prized accomplishments
include his weekly documen
taries produced for television,
and his Interview with Germaine
Greer in Britain (this particular
article was sent to a syndicated
agency for publication. Another
accomplishment would be, "be
ing a recipient of a bronze
medal” that he received for
articles concerning the Jamaican
cultural scene.
Some of his future goals in
clude working with Esmor Jones,
working on a film entitled, “The
Life of Norman Manley."
(Manley was a founder of
"Modern Jamaica”).
“I feel at home at Clark, he
commented, have enjoyed
meeting the students and
answering their queries.”
A lasting impression would be
the oral presentation by Monty
Ross and Yolanda White,
members of Clark College's
Debate Team and first place
winners in the Texas Southern

houses and work. Students will
also receive stipends for board
and lodging.
In the area of broadcast
journalism, Bowen was
producer-director and film
editor for Jamaica Broadcast
Company’s (JBC) public affairs
department. He was also former
editor for JBC radio and
television news.
Bowen stated that some of his
an educational writer, who has
currently written texts I and 11 on
the West IndianSocial Studiesfor
students on the secondary level.
He also plans to work on his doc
torate degree emphasizing some
aspects of Jamaican Politics, The
early Years of the First Socialist
(People's) Party, and hopes to
write a book on “the Social His
tory of Jamaica”.
At present, Bowen is currently
Debate Tournament. The
presentation was given at
President Blake’s house in honor
of Bowen. “It was an un
forgettable experience,” he said.
