According to Dr. Don Cooper, Oklahoma State University team physician and director of OSU's hospital, “It’s a normal part of a person’s life and existence, hav ing sexual activity the night before a contest probably isn’t going to make any difference one way or another." He said a myth perpetuated among certain boxing trainers is that having sexual intercourse makes a man weak. “They take a fellow into train ing camp and keep them away from women for three to six weeks and believe he can’t fight while sexually active because it makes him weak. This is pretty much an old wives tale that has gotten perpetrated over the years and has spilled over into other sports,” says Copper. Copper said that it is more im portant for male athletes to get enough sleep - usually six to eight hours a night. “Generally speaking, sexual intercourse doesn't usually expend much energy over that length of time,” he said. "It may be an advantage to the athlete because after intercourse there is a definite satition response, a satisfaction response and maybe he can have a better night's sleep." PRO BASKETBALL -The San Antonio Spurs an nounced last week that holdout forward Larry Kenon had signed with Chicago Bulls. Kenon, who has balked at stay ing at San Antonio for a reported $400,000 to $250,000, reportedly had been talking to Chicago, Los Angeles and New Jersey. -Spurs spokesman Wayne Witt said as compensation from Chicago the team would receive "two 1981 draft choices and a substantial amount of cash," but disclosed no other details of the arrangement. Kenon, 6'9” and 215 pounds, , has referred to himself as “the best all - around forward in the NBA.” He averaged 20.1 points and 10 rebounds a game last season. -Veteran forward Rick Barry of the Houston Rockets is retiring after 14 seasons in professional basketball and will purse a television broadcasting career. “It’s over, I'm not going to be playing anymore," Barry, said last week. "I actually make the decision to retire in August knowing full well that I was still capable of making a solid con tribution for some time.” The Rockets signed Barry to a $1 million contract in 1978 after he left the Golden State Warriors. The Rockets front of fice indicated last season they would not re-sign Barry, now a free agent. No other NBA team has expressed great interest in Barry and the nine - time All - Pro said, “I truly believe that if I hadn’t been abused the way I was in Houston, I would be playing somewhere right now.” “Some members of the media got it in their heads that I was go ing down to Houston and be the great savior,” he added. "Yet I was never asked to shoot the ball 20 times per game and score the points the way I did at Golden State.” Jim Chones of the Los Angeles Lakers faces legal action after poking a referee in the eye dur ing a recent championship game in Cleveland’s Metro Summer League. Joe Hewitt, a 21 year old of ficial, was taken by police am bulance to a hospital, where he was confined for 6 days before undergoing laser surgery to c^-rect retinal damage. PRO BASEBALL The Kansas City Royals George Brett, who is bidding to become the major’s first 400 hitter in nearly 40 years, missed his eighth straight game due to his injured right hand. Brett, batting .3%, still needs 55 more plate appearances to qualify for the bitting title in his bid to become baseball’s first .400 hittersince Ted Williamsdid it in 1941. Brett’s status remains on a day to day basis, with the Royals preparing for an upcoming series with the California Angels. (Photo by Jerome Gwinn) Steelers Team To Beat In ’80 If the Panther sports editor is right, the 1981 Super Bowl in the New Orleans Superdome will be a battle of Pennsylvania teams the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles. However, the Steelers are the overwhelm ing choice to win their fifth Super Bowl. The Panther sports editor seems to think that the Steelers are the odds on favorite to cap ture their fifth American Football Conference championship, while the Houston Oilers and the San Diego Chargers have outside chances of upseeding Pittsburgh. In the National Foot ball Conference, the Eagles were the number one choice, follwoed by the Chicago Bears and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers respectively. In the divisional races, the closest race, according to the editor will be the NFC Central; Here Tampa Bay is expected to repeat as champion by edging out the Chicago Bears. Philadelphia was tabbed to beat out the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East, whereas the Atlanta Falcons are expected to win their first NFC West title. Another close race is predicted in the AFC West, with San Diego a slight choice over the Broncos of Denver. Pittsburgh was naturally the choice in the AFC Central, while New England was the pick in the AFC East. However, a close race is expected herewith the Patriots getting stiff competiton from the Miami Dolphins and the Baltimore Colts.
