Dance Theatre Kicks Off Season
BY SHERRY JONES
Panther Entertainment Editor
September marks the begin
ning of the arts season and to
kick off the year, Dance Atlanta is
presetting the Alvin Ailey
American Dance Theater.
Starting September 16-20 at
the Fox Theater, the Atlanta
audience will once again witness
the stylized choreography of
Alvin Ailey, along with George
Faison, Lar Lubovitch and
Kathryn Posin
The highlight of the com
pany’s return will be the Atlanta
Premiere featuring six works
never before seen in this area.
Memoria, Ailey's newest
offering to the premiere is
“dedicated -to the joy . . . the
beauty . .. the creativity .. . and
the wild spirit of my friend, Joyce
T risler,” related the
choreographer. The work was
premiered in November, 1979
and is considered his best
choreography since Revelations.
For the last twenty years, Alvin
Ailey and his American Dance
Theater has combined ballet,
jazz, modern and Afro -
Carribean dances. And through
those mixtures he has created a
style that has caused audiences
from around the world to dis
cover his uniqueness.
Linda Spriggs, a native Atlan
tan will be featured in Les Noces
(The Wedding) by Lar Lubovitch.
A tale about an arranged
marriage that is set in a Village of
Middle Europe.
Included in the six Atlanta
premieres are two selections
dedicated to the theme of love.
Inside (Between Love . . . And
Love) by Ulyusses Dove is a solo
experience of beginner’s love.
By using a bordello in the
performance that shows the pas
sion of the heart. Kathryn Posin’s
Later That Day is a romantic
selection depicting the
famous red light district of New
Orleans as his background.
Donald McKayle will present
selections of jazz in the District
Storyville. Duke Ellington,
Sidney Bechet and Jelly Roll
Morton will set the mood of the
scene with their famous music.
This is the fifth time the Alvin
Ailey American Dance Theatre
has performed in Atlanta. During
September, 1977, the company
presented workshops, open
rehearsals, master classes and
lecture demonstrations.
Remember Ailey's beloved
classics Revelations and Suite
Otis? These selections will also
be featured during the com
