Page 8 Clark Atlanta University Panther October 4, 1990 First Attendant Stresses School Spirit By CYDNEY WILLIAMS Managing Editor Just as a battery brings life and rejuvenation, so does Durrell Subrena Davis, first attendant to Miss Clark Atlanta University. Speaking of batteries, Ms. Davis used “The coopertone candidate, no other candidate works harder or last longer,” as her campaign slogan for Miss CAU. Hard work indeed obtained the position of first attendant for Ms. Davis. “Campaigning is not just about putting up posters and passing out candy to get votes,” said Ms. Davis. “It goes a lot deeper than that. The competition among the young ladies is very intense. There fore, you have to be confident in yourself. For each positive quality someone else has, you have to find two or more qualities on your side.” “I put everything I had into that pageant,” said Davis. As a result, she was victor as Miss Delta Charm. This gave her incentive to aim higher and do more. She said she combined that incentive along with her favorite bible verse, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” The result was Ms. Davis running for the position of Ms. CAU. The love of her school spirit shows in her commit ment as first attendant. “I love my school,” said Ms. Davis with a sentimental ring in her voice. Ms. Davis wants to do everything in her power to promote school unity and togetherness for CAU. Ms. Davis is a first generation college student. “I have to give back to everyone that has helped mold me into the person I am today,” said Ms. Davis. “I want Clark Atlanta University students and staff to know that I am a warm person,” said Ms. Davis. In addition, she emphasized that there can never be too good of a relationship between students and staff. “There is always room for improvement,” said Ms. Davis. Therefore, she is willing to do anything within reason, that will better her campus and its relations among students and staff. The title of first attendant has not changed her, Ms. Davis said. “I have never been the type of person who always wanted to be in the spotlight.” Furthermore, she explained not being in the limelight had nothing to do with her self esteem. “I just try hard to be myself. Therefore, I do not need publicity concerning me all of the time,” Ms. Davis added. Winning her first title as a queen was in 1988. Ms. Davis reminisced how this made her feel. She grew up in Miami. Among the top priorities in Ms. Davis’ life is obtaining a sound job in order to provide for her family. She also wants to give back to her community and CAU. Ms. Davis wants to do good to others and as a result she knows eventually it will pay off. “I will get my due justice if I think unselfishly,” said Ms. Davis. She is a senior in Mass Media Arts with a concentra tion in Radio, Television and Film. She has a minor in Marketing. 22-yr.-old Ms. Davis believes in being free of conceit and arrogance. “I like being a positive person,” said Ms. Davis. “I feel strongly about being calm in every situation.” Ms. Davis has utilized her talent and hard work in other activities on campus. The Inspirational Voices of Faith gospel choir means a great deal to her. She has been involved in this organization since her freshman year. She also added her strong respect and love for campus minister, Rev. Paul Easley. According to students on campus CAU has a lot to be proud of this year. DURRELL DA VIS First A ttendant “We are being represented well by the ladies in the homecoming court,” said Farina Hayes, a senior at CAU. Everyone who knows Ms. Davis agrees on her out going personality and her gift to talk. However, she is also known for helping those when needed as well as her love for God. Hats off to Ms. CAU and her elegant court. mmmmmmwxmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmrnmmmmUMmmmmm mmmmmmmmrnmsmm mrnmimmm Tiffany Strawbridge: An Active Voice At CAU By JAYME L.
