Panthers Lose, 36-13
By ANTHONY GEORGE III
Staff Writer
Midway through the second quarter with the Clark Atlanta
University leading Albany State 7-6, Panthers safety Schedrick
Austin intercepted a pass and returned the ball to the Albany
State 30-yard line. But the play was called back as officials
penalized the Panthers for unnecessary roughness.
“This isn’t right,” Clark Atlanta University first-year head
coach Willie Hunter mumbled as he paced the sidelines. “I
swear this just isn’t right. Those guys wearing the white and
black uniforms should be fair. This just isn’t right.”
Albany went on to score five plays later on a 27-yard
touchdown pass and never trailed again as they beat the
Panthers 36-13.
“This was a very big play,” coach Hunter said. “If there
would not have been a penalty on that interception, we would
have had another opportunity to score before halftime. Even if
we wouldn't have scored, we could have went into the locker
room up 7-6.
“It seems the officials watch more closely to what we do to
people, but they aren’t concerned what people do to us. 1 am
not going to blame the officials for our losing, but I fault
ourselves with the fumble and interceptions.”
Quaterback Marlow Roberson, who coming off of a
233-yard performance in the Panthers’ 28-14 victory over
North Carolina Central, threw two interceptions and fumbled
three times.
The Panthers set the tone for the game early as they scored a
drive 74 yards on seven plays for a touchdown. The big play on
the drive was a miscue by punter Jackie Smith, who bobbled
the snap and threw to fullback Leo Barr, who ran 69-yards to
the Albany State 5-yard line. Two plays later, Roberson scored
on a 1-yard run.
Leading 7-0 in the first quarter, the Panthers’ had a chance to
put the game out of reach on their third possession of the game
as they drove the Panthers to the Albany State 10-yard line. But
Roberson throwing for the end zone on second-and-goal at the
5-yard line was intercepted.
Albany scored their first touchdown on a strange play. On a
drive that started on their 46-yard line, the Rams drove to the
Panthers’ 15-yard line in 9 plays. Facing a fourth-and-one, the
Rams fumbled the ball and cornerback, Millard Hamilton,
recovered the ball. The Panthers, who lined up in a wishbone
offense, fumbled the snap giving the ball right back to the
Rams. The Rams were then faced with another fourth-and-one
situation on the Panthers’ 1-yard line. But scored on a
quarterback sneak, as officials ruled that Albany State
quarterback Johnny Gilbert crossed the goal line.
NOTES
Senior linebacker Richard Sibert was named Southern
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference defensive player of
the week for his effort in the game against Albany State.
Sibert had 17 tackles (8 solo, 9 assists), one quarterback
sack, four quarterback hurries, one pass blocked, one
fumble recovery and one blocked field goal.

Sports, The Way It Is

Best In The AUC?
Maybe you can call it “Hunter’s Magic” or
“The Hunter Mystique,” but I think that the
Panthers are the best football team in the
Atlanta University Center (AUC). I’ve seen all
three AUC teams (Morehouse, Morris Brown
and Clark Atlanta University) and the Panthers
are clearly the best. Morris Brown is inconsistent
on offense and mediocre on defense. Morehouse
is weak at quarterback and low on confidence.
Here’s why I make this bold assessment. This
year senior quarterback Marlow Roberson is
having a steady season, the offensive line is
playing more as a group and the defense is
improving. If only the Panthers could play
Morris Brown again.
The GQ Jinx
1 finally have a reason for the Los Angeles
Rams’ slow start. No, it’s not the recent string of
injuries. Nor is it the fact that the team has yet to
find a decent replacement for former running
back Greg Bell. It’s...the Gentleman’s Quarterly
jinx. Since Rams quarterback Jim Everett was
on the cover of the August issue of Gentleman’s
Quarterly magazine, the Rams have gone
downhill. Everyone knows that the Rams have
the talent to win the Super Bowl. When great
prognosticators like me and Sports Illustrated’s
Paul Zimmerman say a team is going to win the
Super Bowl, you can bet the morgage on it. How
can Zimmerman and I be wrong in the same
season? Let’s face it, it’s got to be the spirits from
the underworld.
No Way, Jose
I love sports, and the reason 1 love sports can
be seen in the Cincinnati Reds World Series
sweep of the Oakland A’s. All of the “experts”
thought that the A’s were unbeatable, and had a
dynasty in the making. But the Reds just did
their job, gave it all they had, and pulled off the
upset of the year. I guess the thing that should
have given the “experts” a tip to what was going
to happen, was when A’s outfielder Jose
Canseco said the A’s were the best team in
baseball and maybe even the best team ever.
Saintly Move
Congratulations to the New Orleans Saints!
Getting disgruntled quarterback Steve Walsh
from the Dallas Cowboys was the deal of the
year. Walsh is smart, feisty and a big time
winner. All he did in his two years starting at
quarterback at the University of Miami was lead
the Hurricanes to a national championship and a
number two ranking. I remember the game,
which ranks as the best comeback I’ve ever seen,
when the Hurricanes were down 30-14 to the
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and he led
them to a 31-30 comeback win. I’m telling you,
Walsh is going to be great. I have never said a
quarterback was going to be great so it’s got to be
true.
