Welcome to “On the Tip.” Turn to this column for
happenings in Black entertainment. Let’s begin with ON THE
TIP in Rap: Several popular rap artists have collaborated on a
rap against censorship album. Rappers 2 Live Crew, Ice Cube,
Ice T, N.W.A., Eazy-E, The Geto Boys and McChoice have
released an album entitled “Explicit Rap.” The album is
expected to cause a little controversy. It contains some of the
most profane and nastiest material. The album is released on
Priority records. . .X-Clan was in London promoting their
BlackWatch movement. The group spoke at the Africa Centre
Convent Garden to hopefully start a chapter in London.
Earlier this year, X-Clan held a protest march called Outrage
tor the murder of Yussef Hawkins. Hawkins was the Black
teenager shot in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn last year.
. . I wo new groups have emerged on the rap scene:Y.B.T and
Little Posse. Y.B.T.(Young Black Teenagers) is causing a little
controversy. Why? Well, they are not as Black as you think. .
.In tact, not Black at all. The second group is called Little
Posse. No, they are not little kids but midgets. Group members
B-lll, Gizmo C and M.C. Science will be releasing their first
new single entitled “Gimme Some Lovin” very shortly...
ON THE DANCE MUSIC TIP: Chicago House Music
artists Ten City are releasing their new album called "State Of
Mind.” House Music producers Frankie Knuckles and David
Morales have released remixes for Lalah Hathays singles
“Baby Don’t Cry” and “Heaven.” Soul to Soul is releasing
remixes of “Missing You” from their “New Decade” album.
Former Soul to Soul member Caron Wheeler is doing well with
her new album entitled “UK Black.” Hip House artists K.C.
Flight has a new single called "Jump For Joy.”
ON THE R&B TIP: Larry Blackmon and “As Nasty As He
Wanna Be” Luther Cambell have formed a new record label
called ' CREW LA POO.” Word Up!. . .En Vogue has joined
with M.C. Hammer for his 62 concert tour. . .Stevie Wonder
has a new single called “Keep Our Love Live.” Price will open
a nightclub in his hometown. He will also start a production
company as well. Jimmy Jam is expected to have his own radio
station in Minneapolis. Janet Jackson has set a new record in
pop music. Her new album, “Rhythm Nation” has become the
first to have six top five singles on the BillBoard’s top 100
singles. Motown records will release a Marvin Gaye anthology.
It will include 34 songs never released. Loose Ends has a new
single called “Don’t Be A FOOL” from their new album “Look
How Long.” Pattie Labelle will be honored for the
Philadelphia Hall of Fame. Quincy Jones and Aretha Franklin
will be recipients for the Grammy Legend Awards.
Hey Mon, It’s time for ON THE TIP IN REGGAE: The new
Aswad album has been released. It is entitled “Too Wicked.”
Dance hall reggae is gaining popularity again. Some members
from the outlandish group “The Talking Heads”are producing
Ziggy Marley’s new album. Many wonder whether this album
will be as successful as his last two Grammy winning albums.
Bob Marley’s mentor Joe Higgs has a new album.
ON THE GOSPEL TIP: The Queens Community Choir has
released their new album “Make Me Over.” The Benson Arts
Spectacular was held recently. It featured Albertina Walker,
Ihomas Whitfield, Commissioned and Gospel rappers
Transformation Crusade. The event was for the 20th annual
Gospel Announcers Guild. The event will be televised on BET
this winter. Walt Whitman and The Soul Children Of Chicago
were featured on the Motown 30th Anniversary. The special
will air on CBS sometime in November. The 12th annual
Gospel awards will be held this month. It will feature Gospel
artists Tramaine Hawkins, Donalnd Malloy, Rev. Darry
Coley, the Jenkins Brothers and Ben TankFord. Denise
Technor of “Mama Don’t” has signed with Tyscot records.
Michael Houston president of the Chicago based Suite IX
Records has signed a multi-year contract with Tyscot as well.
ON THE JAZZ TIP: George Benson has released a new
album featuring the Count Basie Orchestra. It is called “Big
Boss Band.” The Smithsonian Institute and Oberlin College
will publish a Jazz Masterworks edition. The album will
contain some hard to find records of Count Basie, Duke
Ellington, And Earl Hines. Jazz pianists Oscar Petterson will
be reuniting with his band. The band includes Ray Brown and
Her Ellis.
ON THE TELE—MOVIE TIP: Rumor has it that former
“In Living Color” cast member Kim Coles was fired. Kim
Coles is known for her stand up comic routines and her
appearances at “Showtime at the Appollo.” The Hudlin
Rivers Productions Inc. presents Sounds of the Top 10 and “Nothing but a Party" is number
New York-Motown recording artist and 33 and still climbing.
Atlanta’s own Basic Black in concert at the Tickets are on sale at all Bernard’s Record
Masquerade on Nov. 24. This will be Basic Store locations (Westen Mall, Stewart A ve.,
Black’s only appearance in the Atlanta Area. Glenwood A ve.), Wax’n Fax (Little Five
V-103s Carol Blackmon will be the guest Points), Wuxtry Records (Decatur), Chapter 3
emcee with local artist Cool Joe opening the Records (Midtown), Atlanta CD (Peachtree
show. Street) and at the Masquerade Box Office (625

Record's hottest new entry into the urban arena.
Their debut album is called “It’s a Man’s
Thang”, a 10-song masterpiece that virtually
ensures that Basic Black will be on the charts for
quite some time.
Brothers, directors of “House Party,” are
working on a sequel. They are also working on a
special on “Parliament Funkadelic." Richard
Pryor is starring in a new movie “Another Day.”
Recording artists Levert will host a television
special for the American troops in the Middle
East. BET and the syndicated radio program
RadioScope are sponsoring the event.
ON THE HOME VIDEO TIP: The block
buster movie “Dick Tracy” will be out Dec. 18
and “Robocop 2” on the 13th. The Federal
Trade Commission is looking into alleged price
fixing in the home video industry.
This sizzling group boasts four talented young
men led by the vocal prowess of Darrell (Dee)
Adams. Adams’ style harkens memories of
Jackie Wilson, Sam & Dave and all of the great
vocalists who rely on the sheer exuberance of
their God-given talents to command an
audience.
Joining Adams are Walter (Mucho) Scoptt
and Lloyd (Spec) Turner on keyboards and
Kelvin Bradshaw on drums. This mix' came
about through the chance to open for fellow
Motown artists, Today; and Guy in Columbus,
Ga.
“We did talent shows every year before the
break came of opening forTodayand Guy,’’said
Adams. “The show also had three other bands,
but we kept beating them.”
The drummer, Kelvin Bradshaw, is one of
Clark Atlanta University’s finest. “I have been
drumming ever since 1 can remember,” said
Bradshaw.
Bradshaw joined jazz band while in high
school, and won a “Who’s Who” musician’s
award. At Clark College, Bradshaw was a
member of the Marching Panthers Band and
taught high school students private lessons.
Bradshaw was discovered by Gene Griffin
when he auditioned to play drums for Today.
