Page 8 Clark Atlanta University Panther April 1, 1991 Looking For A Better Season: Football Team Begins Spring Practice By ANTHONY GEORGE Ill Sports Editor It's is spring again. Time again for hanging out in the park, enjoying outdoors, baseball and spring practice football. Yes, Clark Atlanta University Panthers will suit up again, beginning April 8. The Panthers will begin three day workouts, 5:30-7:00p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Panther coaches will have an opportunity to determine how successful the off-season program has really been. Currently, the Panthers lift weights and run, starting at 5:30 a.m. Offensive coordinator Robert Haygood said he is real excited to begin the spring drills. The Panthers only lost four players to graduation and expects the other players to return. "We do not expect any academic casualties because the first set of grades looked real good," Haygood said. "We did lose some key people in key positions this year, but we should be better next season because the guys have gained a year experience." One of the key positions Haygood cited was losing four-year quarterback Marlow Roberson. Haygood said quarterbacks Jackie Smith, Charles Parks and Adrian Greene would be competing for the starting spot. Haygood said he expects senior Felix Lewis and Richard Golden to have excellent seasons playing wide receiver. He also expects Edward Jones to contribute this season. He was ruled academically ineligible last year. Those players are expected to take some of the offensive load that Millard Hamilton carried. Hamilton was also lost to graduation. Haygood also said the defense will be stronger through incoming freshman players. CAU recruited three large and quick defensive backs, an area where the Panthers where in dire need of improvement. Haygood said they have letters of intent from Micheal Thomas 6-foot-3, 195-pounds from Dallas, Byron Register, 6'3" 195- pounds from Brown High School in Atlanta and Byron Ford, 6’3" 190- pounds from Dunwoody High School, also in metro Atlanta. "We wanted to move from small, quick defensive backs to large physical and quick defensive backs," Haygood said. "We may put the quys who were there last season on the offensive side of the ball." The Panthers also improved on the offensive end as they signed London Bolden, A kicker from Dillard High School in Florida. He led his team in scoring last season with almost 1,000 points scored last season. Other players who have signed letters of intent to CAU are Craig DuBose, 6'4" 240-pound linebacker from Decatur, Ga., Hugh Edwards, 6'- 0" 200-pound fullback from Kentucky and Ken Scott, a 6'3", 260-pound defensive tackle from Dillard H.S. Note: Senior Millard Hamilton improved his standings for the upcoming NFL Draft with an impressive performance at the NFL Combine’s last month in Indianapolis. Hamilton rated high among the wide recievers at the event, which allows NFL scouts the opportunity to test the top collegiate players in a various amount of endurance exams. I Pritchett Talks About Resignation accomplishments at CAU. He is extremely proud that he was able to accomplish so much without ever giving out a full scholarship. He also spoke very highly of this season's team as being the most disciplined and mature group of players he had ever coached. Pritchett also praised the student body who supported them this season. He said the crowd this year displayed the most enthusiasm and school spirit in his 13 years at Clark. "It has been a long good trip for me and my staff," Pritchett said. "I hope everyone will continue to grow. Next season, CAU will have one of the best basketball teams in the schools history. It will be up to the administration to realize that, and treat those people accordingly. I hope to follow and read about these guys next season. They will succeed. I am sure they won't let me down." \CAU Track Team I Off And Running BY EVITA LEIGH ELLIS Contributing Writer The 1990-91 track team has entered its new semester with a competitive start. Coach Earl Wilson, a second year coach at CAU, has a team that consists of 52 members, 28 men and 24 women. Officially, practice began at the beginning of second semester, but some people started training in November, to get an competitive edge. "There is a lot of good people and talent on the team.” said Wilson. "Most of the runners are freshmen and sophomores, but there are a few juniors and seniors mixed in." To get the team in shape Wilson developed a weight training program, a series of track workouts along with flexibility. "All of these areas are important in conditioning the body, along with a healthy diet.” said Wilson. As a moral booster, Wilson continues to tell the team that ," to be the best, you must train and be mentally prepared to win.” While training track members, Wilson tries to bring out new talent in each individual. Throughout the year, Wilson works with each member, helping them to achieve their potentials and preparing them to be winners. The first meet was held at Morehouse on Feb. 23 with eight schools competing. The other schools were Morehouse, CAU, Anderson Club, Morris Brown College, UT, and Spelmen. The CAU women finished first and the men finished second.
