\PANTHER page 10 September 25, 1991 SPORTS THE STREAK IS OVER CAU WHIPS MORRIS BROWN By Anthony George 2U Sports Editor It took 16-years, three coaches and three stadiums, but Clark Atlanta University defeated Morris Brown 29-6 in the Bill Lucas Memorial Classic, August 30, at Atlanta Fulton- County Stadium. Not since 1974 when the Panthers defeated Morris Brown 17-6 on their season finale, had the Panthers accomplished such a feat. That same year, Clark was awarded the SLAC Division II championship. "This is a very special victory for us,” said second-year head coach Willie Hunter. 'We have been training for this game since the Morehouse game last season. We felt in order to get off on the right foot, we had to beat Morris Brown. It is a real good feeling, and all the coaches and players made it possible." One of the keys for the Panthers was their stingy defense, which only allowed 24 yards rushing for the Wolverines. In contrast, the Panthers' running back Charles Evans rushed for 81 yards on 20 carries, being the primary work horse for the Panther offense. The Panthers finished with 173 yards on the ground, which helped take the pressure off first-year quarterback Charles Parks. Parks completed seven of 19 passes for 91 yards and two touchdown passes. He also ran for 17 yards on seven carries, and accounted for two rushing touchdowns. "It was a team effort,," Hunter said. "I think Charles Parks played an extremely good game for his first start. Charles Evans ran the ball hard and also Tim Lowery. The offensive line created holes for our backs, and our defense, especially our secondary, played well." The Panthers took an early 8-0 lead on a 12-play drive that started on the Panthers 41 yard line. The big play was a 19- yard pass from Parks to senior wideout Felix Lewis. Parks compieted the drive with a 1- yard quarterback keeper. Wideout Sedrick Austin caught a 2-yard pass for the two-point conversion. Later that period, the Panthers drove 65-yards on seven plays for their second touchdown. Austin, who moved from defense to offense this season, made a leaping catch in the end zone, giving the Panthers a 15-0 lead. "Austin made one of the greatest catches you will see all year on that play," said offensive corordinator, Robert Haygood. The Panthers recovered a fumble on the Wolverines next possession, and scored on Lewis' 19-yard touchdown reception, going into halftime leading 22-0. According to Haygood, the Panthers ran more than planned to settle down their young quarterback. He also praised the offensive line and how the offense converted their third down opportunities. "We played well with a lot of savvy.," Haygood said. 'We took what the defense gave us and that allowed us to be successful. We were also strong defensively, and we won the kicking game." The Panthers improved their record to 2-0, and the Bears fell to 1-1. This is the first time in 13 years that Clark has won their opening two games. The last Lime occured in 1978 when the Panthers won the SLAC. ’We came into the season with intentions of being a contender and to do that, you must win games," said Panthers' second-year head coach Willie Hunter. "Getting off to a good start really helps the teams' confidence, and it's better to be 2-0 than 0-2." The Panthers got their first break early in the second half when the Bears' center snapped the ball over the punters head. CAU gained possession at the Bears' 13-yard line. Six plays later, quarterback Charles Parks scored on a 1-yard keeper, giving 'That was the big play for us," Hunter said. "From there, we just wore them down." After several key defensive stops, the Panthers drove 74-yards on nine plays, scoring on a 1-yard run by running back Tim Lowery. The big play of the drive was a 22-yard run by Parks on a third-and-eight from the Panthers 28-yard line. The Bears were penalized an additional 15-yards for a personal foul. After halftime, the Panthers switched gears form their run- and- shoot offense to a wishbone. CAU finished with 212 net yards rushing, with senior runningback Charles Evans finishing with 112 yards with 25 carries. The Panthers put the game out of reach early in the fourth period on defensive back Michael Neal's 50-yard interception, giving the Panthers a 33-7 lead, with 12:18 left. "That play basically put the game out of reach," Hunter said. "Also, we swithed to our wishbone to run time off the clock and we just the Panthers a 13‘7.lead. wore them down.
