Page 11 Clark Atlanta University Panther October 9, 1991 CAU, J.C. Smith, Battle to a Draw By Anthony George in Sports Editor Despite controlling the game on offense and defense, Clark Atlanta University made several mistakes, as they tied J.C. Smith 16 -16 in Charlotte, N.C. Sept. 21. CAU was penalized 15 times for 94 yards. Also, the Panthers lost two of six fumbles and had a pass intercepted. One of the most critical mistakes was a missed extra-point attempt by Panther place kicker London Bolden that would have given CAU a 17-16 lead in the fourth quarter. "The snap to the holder hit the ground, and it threw the timing off," said David Edwards, defensive coordinator. "Overall it was a bad game for us. No way should that team been on the same field as us. We totally dominated the game, but we still tied. We_should have won. "Overall, it was a very bad game. They should not have been on the field with us"- coach Edwards. "The deiense played pretty well, but they were able to score in those critical moments. Also we got some very bad calls. Overall, it was a bad game for the coaches and the players." One of the calls the Panthers were slighted on was an intentional grounding by the quarterback. J.C. Smith was deep in their territory, and the Panthers almost sacked quarterback Joe Morgan in the end zone. The referees called intentional grounding, but penalized five yard from the line of scrimmage. On that play, the referees should have given the Panthers two points for a safety and a free kick. Panthers' New Field General By Kim Hicks Contributing Writer Charles Parks is Clark Atlanta University's starting quarterback for the 1991 football season, replacing last year's four-year starter, Marlow Roberson. Parks, a native of Oxford, NC., is majoring in Health and Physical Education. When asked how does it feel being quarterback he said, "It is a veiy exciting and adventurous job." Parks was the back-up quarterback last season. He doesn't think he has given it his all, because he is not familiar with starting. He has not played significantly in three years. Yet, he has guided the Panthers to a 2-1-1 record. Parks said his efforts are not solely why the team has been winning, but because of a team effort. Ironically, despite a career best 342 yards passing against West Georgia, the Panthers’ sufferred their only loss. "We are a family. We stay together and play positive", Parks says. "Parks is an intelligent and very coachable person which makes it easy in the things we do," says Robert Haygood, offensive coordinator. "Parks possesses confidence, he is a leader on the field, and dedicated to winning, and that's the kind of quarterback we need." Photo By Anthony George Solving the Jinx By Anthony George m Sports Editor Head coaches spend the entire season marking X's and O's on the chalk board, observing miles of film and giving motivational and behavioral speeches when necessary. Most go into the season with high goals and expectations and train their players to attain to such heights. Rarely does a team win all their games but to win more than you lose can be considered a success. Take a look at the history of Clark Atlanta University's football program. The last coach to have a winning season was Jessie McClardy, in 1978. Since then ,CAU has had 11 consecutive losing seasons. Then in comes coach Willie Hunter, one of the most successful coaches in the Atlanta school system. He stresses mental toughness, physical endurance and a strong family atmosphere. All are key ingredients to winning. Since taking over this season, Hunter has had an opportunity to make a big change unlike last year, he was in charge of making the 1991 football schedule. The Panthers have a good team, But coach Hunter has made them better. First, throw out that first game against Morris Brown. It is an ongoing rivalry that will be around long after our grandchildren have graduated . Now, lets do some real dysecting. After a week off, the Panthers prepared for Livingstone and J.C. Smith, schools that do not have a reputation of having powerhouse football teams, pasties so to speak. Kinda like when University of Georgia opened the season against Western Carolina. A couple of victories here, and the team is on a roll. The party is over in Carrollton. The West Georgia Braves may be one of the toughest opponents the Panthers play. A great tune-up for the beginning of the remaining SIAC games. The Panthers play a luke-warm SIAC opponent for openers. The Panthers will remember the victory over the Wildcats from last year, and with their renowned confidence, will prevail over Fort Valley. Then the real tough schedule kicks in. But after the great start by the Panthers, they are considered a major power in the SIAC. Imagine Hunter in the locker room if the Panthers are losing to Tuskegee by halftime. "I can't believe you guys are playing so poorly against Tuskegee after whipping West Georgia" he would say. " Now go out there and kick there .... well you know the rest." Then the Panthers will beat the 0-4 Golden Tigers. After taking a week off, the Panthers will take a 4-1-1 record into homecoming. Poor Miles. Seriously, poor of Miles. No more Tuskegee, Alabama A&M or Albany State for Homecoming. By that time, Miles will be 0- 7, and the Panthers will beat the Bears badly, to make up for the years that CAU was humiliated on their Homecoming. CAU fans can celebrate a homecoming victory for the first time since 1987. After that, the Panthers face the two toughest teams in the SIAC, Alabama A&M and Albany State. These games are mandatory by SIAC rules. Hey, before you give up hope, take a look, both games at Herndon Stadium. The home team advantage. The panthers haven't won against Albany since 1978, so the theme will be, 'The year the streaks ended.' After the big win against Albany, fans will flood Herndon stadium dawned in red, black and grey as the Panthers play the Bulldogs. Despite never beating Alabama A&M since the series began in 1984, the Panthers will be real fired-up for this game. Again I can here the pep talk. "Common men, we aren't 6-1-1 for nothing. If you play them like you played West Georgia, we can beat anybody. This game determines the best of the SIAC. Come on, lets kick some ...." The finale will be against CAU f rival Morehouse. Another win under the belt, and CAU fans and alumni will be grinning ear to ear. Imagine, the Panthers 8-1- 1, and undefeated in the SIAC. But a loss to the Maroon Tigers will be like 0-10 over again, like the reminders of the 80’s.
