Page 6 Clark Atlanta University Panther October 9, 1991 # GL BAL ISSUES WORLD VIEW. . . BY GEORGE. THIS SITUATION IS GETTING RIDICULIOUS Well, well, well, the bully of the world is once again flexing his arthritic muscles. Yes, George Bush is on one of his ever familiar ego trips. I think Mr. President, the name we have been brainwashed into calling Bush, just sits in his oval office all day long thinking about who he can pick on next. His victim for the moment seems to be Iraq. Iraq has been ordered by the United Nations (U.N.) to let special weapon inspectors view their military arsenal. Though the U.N. claims responsibility for this hideous request, you don't have to be a political expert to know that George Bush and his cronies are behind this. Why wasn't the U.N. worried about inspecting Iraq's weapons a year ago? Why is Iraq the only country being singled out? Because the U.S. thinks it knows everything about everybody, but during Operation Desert Shield/Storm Iraq used some weapons that caught the U.S. by suprise. Sure the radio, television and print media reported that the U.S. thoroughly dominated the Iraqi soldiers, but situations like this seem to contradict that. If you soundly defeated Iraq why worry about what weapons they have now? Fear? Or was the war closer than was reported over here? Not only has Bush convinced the U.N. to go after the Iraqi military but it has threatened to deploy (I picked that word up from Stormin Norman) troops to make sure that Iraq cooperates with the U.N. request. Now that is a real bully for you. I don't hear about any other country giving a hoot over the weapons that Iraq has. So since the U.N. is going to look over Iraqi weapons why isn't it also going to inspect U.S. weapons? U.N. officials claim that Iraqi weapons may not comply with its regulations. Does anybody's? I'm sure every country sits down and types up a list of all its weapons and sends it to the U.N. officials. Yeah, right. This is nothing but another blockhead muscle move by Bush, and the U.N. has shown just how fair of an organization it is. Its rules and regulations apply only to those countries whose president (or should I say dictator?) is not named George Bush. By William Blackburn Editorial Page Editor NATIONAL VIEW. . . HEY MAN PUT THAT FLAG AWAY! Whenever you are traveling (by car) to the South from any part of the country and you stop to get gas, eat a snack, or take a break, you get a big "welcome” to the land of Dixie. Confederate flags are on all kinds of souvenirs that are displayed in plain view in the gift shops and service stations on the side of the road. Far be it from me to call myself Yankee Doodle, but the popularity of the Confederate Flag is beyond me (I guess as a Black woman it should be). Some people in this country claim that the Rebel flag is just a symbol of regional southern pride. This is true, but it is also a symbol of the racist, segregated South that succeeded from the Union because Southerners wanted to keep Blacks enslaved and inferior to Whites in every way. The Confederate symbol is part of Georgia's and Mississippi's state flags. South Carolina and Alabama fly the flag over their state capitol’s, and it is the "unofficial" mascot of the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). There is even a T-shirt that has a picture of the flag along with the words, "It's A Southern Thing. . . Ya’ll Wouldn't Understand." I guess whoever designed that was right. Did I mention that the Ku Klux Klan and the Neo-Nazi party have an attachment to the "Stars and Bars" symbol? When Martin Luther King, Jr. and the other leaders of the Civil Rights movement started demonstrating during the 1950s, the Rebel logo gained more popularity than it had during the Civil War. Later it was added to Georgia's state flag to voice White Georgians views toward civil rights. Over 40 years later, the flag remains the same as well as the attitudes of the South. In spite of all of the negative history surrounding the Confederate flag, people still fly it outside of their homes (proudly I might add), and insist that there is no racial connotation and get offended if anyone tells them that they are disturbed by it. America's so called "Melting Pot" is boiling over. Who do you think is getting scorched? By Veronica Fields Entertainment Editor LOCAL VIEW. .. BROTHER MAN. BROTHER MAN, BROTHER MAN The Random House Dictionary defines unity as "the state of being combined with others to form a greater whole." Brothers and sisters take heed. If I were not a member of the Atlanta University Center I might actually believe that we are all one big, beautiful Black family. I’d think isn’t it wonderful how Spelman is Morris Brown's sister and how splendid it is that the brothers and sisters of Clark Atlanta and Morehouse walk hand-in-hand. But this is not true! I am forced to see the reality that we are all for ourselves. No one wants to be an Atlanta University Center, everyone wants to be on their own. I believe in school spirit, but face it, regardless of what school we go to we can't afford to divide among ourselves. We are all Black people in a White world! To put it bluntly, we, as students, are "headed for self-destruction" if we don’t realize that "we’re all in the same gang." Thurgood Marshall once said that there was no difference between a Black snake and a White snake - they both bite. If one A.U.C. school goes down - we all fall down! Now is the time to step back and look at what could be, should be, and with hard work and determination, shall be. Do we truly understand the concept of this A.U. Center? Do we fully understand the powers of the largest community of historically Black colleges in the nation? With unity we can forcibly overcome the obstacles facing our schools, communities and our race. The AUC should be perceived as an entity that is a systematic whole, practicing continuity without deviation. Thus, making the letters A.U.C. not only symbolic of Atlanta University Center but also African-Americans United for Conquest. It’s time to stop the violence among ourselves. Such violence is much like a man fueling the flames destroying the home he worked hard to build. Be aware that our African-American forefathers worked relentlessly to bestow upon us the privileges of an education. Realize that our success will come through the AUC and not as a individual school. United we stand. Divided we fall. Unity in the A.U.C.-THINK ABOUT IT! By Chandra R. Thomas Contributing Writer JUST A COnVERSATIOn PIECE Man, Where did my money Go? Stegall’s is the only place in town that has only a couple of items but still can break you. With those $5 sodas and $2 meals that disappear from your stomach as soon as you hit the door, that store is making a fortune off the students. Mr. Stegall is a nice guy and everything, but the nickel he let me slide with was probably 20 cents over what I should have been paying anyway. But at least we are keeping it in our own community for once. ******** "Air" cancels flight to the White House Oh my gosh, Michael Jordan may yet discover that he is Black. First, he supports his friend Spike Lee by wearing a Malcolm X hat and now he snubs the El Presidente, George Bush, to spend time with his family. I wonder if Spike had anything to do with that since he has so much influence over Lord Michael. Regardless, I am impressed with Mr. Jordan. Just maybe Lord Michael is starting to make decisions based on what Michael Jordan believes in and not what Nike, Wheaties, Coca-Cola and the Chicago Bulls what him to believe in. ******** What are you woof in' about? Night after night Arsenio Hall has so much White talent on his show that my color T.V. goes on the blink. I don't understand why because there is enough Black talent out there that at least one can be on every show. I get so tired of seeing the same old White entertainers on all the time. Arsenio became a success because Black viewers watched his show faithfully when he was starting off but now that he has become a star the Black viewers are secondary. Yeah, Arsenio gets on there and laughs it up with a crowd that is so taken with his Black ways that they scream and yell at his every move. But once again we have a case of "I forgot where I came from and who helped me get started." Poor Arsenio has gone to the dogs. Woof, Woof, Woof. ******** Who will inherit 'Sell-out Fever' Next? I guess the Soul Train has derailed. Because it is amazing how the long time R&B show has hired all those White dancers to shake their scanty clad rumps across the dance floor. Though Don Cornelius is still wearing the same suits he wore when the train first started, other aspects of the show have changed like a chameleon. Twenty years ago not one White wanted to be on Soul Train now everybody wants to ride. I wish we could have something to ourselves. ******** ******** By William Blackburn Editorial Page Editor
