By Anthony George m Sports Editor Clark Atlanta University went to Tuskegee with expectations of avenging last season's humiliating 61- 21 loss, and breaking a eight year losing streak against the Golden Tigers. Although key players on the offensive and defensive lines were injured , the patched-up line.> held together for a quarter, as CAU jumped off to a 17-6 lead. As the game progressed, the patchwork gave away, as Tuskegee rolled-up 41 points in rout to a 47-19 victory. "There is a combination of reasons why the defense failed," said defensive coordinator Dave Edwards. "We had no depth. We had key people hurt going into the game, in addition to a couple of guys playing hurt. They physically wore or second unit guys down.” Runningback Howard Rodman for Tuskegee was the Panthers main antagonist. He rushed for 221 yards on 20 carries and three touchdowns. During the final minutes of the game, 1 ran 85-yards for his th M touchdown. For the Panthers, quarterback Charles Parks had his second 300 -yard passing performance for the year, as he completed 23 of 44 passes for 324 yards and a touchdown. Senior wideout Felix Lewis had his best game of the season with five catches for 131 yards and a to uchdown. The Panthers did manage to lead 19-18 at the half. After a 31-yard field goal by kicker London Bolden, Tuskegee scored on three consecutive drives, giving them a 18-17 lead late in the second period. The extra point attempt was blocked, and cornerback Terry Beckham ran 90 yards for the score. Beckham also had five tackles and an interception. This year, I decided to follow intramural activities more closely, so I assigned a reporter to interview intramural director Dr. Raymond Hughes. Doing a follow-up, to my dismay, the reported told me he died. "Not coach Hughes,” I said. "Couldn't be. He will be around CAU forever. He has been here since 1958. It couldn't be coach Hughes." Unfortunately, it was confirmed that Dr.Hughes died of a heart attack. I went to his memorial service on Friday, and reminisced on the good things i about Dr. Hughes. I met Dr. Hughes my sophomore year taking a softball class. When I first saw him, I wondered, "where did they get this jguy from?" He was a small built man, wore dark shades, and enunciated every word. He spoke slowly, but correctly as to rethink everything he said before it was uttered out of his mouth. Most people in my class originally did not like him. They thought he was mean. Most of us also could not play softball eiiher. There were a few people who had never played softball before. But by the end of the sdrnester, although nobody went to the majors, learned to hit, field and catch. By the end of the semester, he gained respect from the students. I later ran into him while writing a historical piece about Clark College athletics. I was referred to him. In his office contained valuable archives of athletic information about CC. More information than any CAU sports information director could dream of having. I was astonished. He declined to be interviewed at the time because he was working his second thesis. Last year, he finally allowed me to speak to him. For more than three hours, he explained fully, and somewhat accurately some of the problems in the athletic department. He discussed with me solutions and he spoke highly of the things he was trying to achieve. But I had the impression that he was unhappy because the administration would not fully cooperated with his ideas. In one column, I can't express the magnitude of the loss of Dr. Hughes to the university. Even though people sometimes forget accolades of the individual. Dr Hughes will never perish from the CC family. Lady Panthers Lose in Four Sets By Erika S. McElroy Contributing Writing The Clark Atlanta University girl's volleyball team was defeated by Paine College in four sets 15-5, 15-13, 12-15 and 15-8, Oct. 10. Friday's loss dropped the lady Panthers record to 5-9. First- year coach Regana Hill had a few comments about the loss. "We loose more matches because the ! team's endurance level is down, | but overall, the team has improved since the beginning of the season." During the first set, the lady Panthers attempted to block | spikes by the Lions' unsuccessfully. Inconsistent serves, holes in the defense, plus their sluggish court coverage ended in a 15-5 loss. I With added energy and teamwork, CAU gave Paine a lot of competition in the second set. CAU's Keeva Arnold served well and Gwendolyn Bryant covered the ball and made several saves. Despite several good setting and volleying attempts, CAU's Alycia Morris was called for several net violation infractions. Paine did not give up any ground and came from behind and squeezed out a 15-13 win. With the lady Panthers' on the verge of being swept, the third game showed much improved teamwork and increased energy, as they won 15-12. CAU won thanks to a tight defense, court communication and Paine missed several balls. Despite bad calls from the line judge who only called several net violations on CAU, Morris successfully served five balls in a row, and Arnold served the two winning points. The winning streak ended abruptly, as four strong serves from Paine carried them to a 15-8 victory. 'We corrected a lot of our mistakes although we need to be more consistent with our serves, and keep up our endurance throughout the whole match," said senior, co-captain Rhonda Houston. "The team is looking strong, and I know we'll take the next game." 'We need to work on more coverage," said Morris. 'We need to increase our control of the ball, endurance and enthusiasm," said senior Shondrecca Johnson, "but overall the team has improved since the beginning of the season.” A final plea for student support came from Chanestia Davis, She said," Student support gives the team more energy, and all games start at six . Come out and see the last match of the season which is Friday.
