Championship Although CAU lost to Alabama A&M Saturday, they have an outside chance of winning the Southern Intercollegiant Athletic Conference Championship with a win over Morehouse. Here is a look of how the sports editors view the game. Clarf^Mianta vs. Morehouse PASSING OFFENSE: CAU: The Panthers’ first- year quarterback Charles Parks has matured and shown that he can lead the Panthers. He has passed for1,973 yards with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Receiver Felix Lewis has 782 yards with seven touchdowns. The Panther offensive line is banged up, but still keeps opposing de fenses off Parks. Morehouse: QB Chad Pasley has a quarterback rating of 92 percent, but the Maroon Tigers are a run oriented team. EDGE: CAU RUSHING OFFENSE: CAU: The Panthers wish bone has gone sour as the they have only rushed for 140 yards their last two games. Morehouse: Seniors Patrick Gamble and Dextrel Smith lead the Maroon Tigers. For the season, Gamble needs only 35 yards to be the school’s second 1,000 yard rusher in a season. EDGE: Morehouse RUSHING DEFENSE: CAU: Nagging injuries to defensive lineman Steve McClardy, Dale Dixon and Anthony Henderson have made the Panthers vunerable to the run. Eric Wilson leads the Pan thers with 71 tackles For the season, CAU has given up an average of 159.2 yards a game against the run. Morehouse: Noseguard Kevyn Giggers and linebacker Carlton Moore lead the Tigers, but they give up on the average 141.8 yards per game. EDGE: EVEN.(If the Panther lineman are healthy.) \ /C( t /y ¥ Saturday November 16 Memorial Stadium * 1:30p.m. PASSING OFFENSE: The edge goes to Clark Atlanta. Their quarterback, Charles Parks, is second in the conference in passing yards. His primary target, Felix Lewis, is third in the SIAC in receptions. MH’s leading receiver, Jairus Middlebrooks, would come in third on CAU’s team in receiving yardage. MH quarterback Chad Pasley has thrown for 340 yards and 6 TD's in his last two outings. RUSHING OFFENSE: The edge goes to Morehouse. They are leading the conference in rushing offense and are ranked 20th nationally in that category. CAU has problems stopping the run which should mean a big day for the MH backs. Patrick Gamble and Dextrel Smith have over 1500 yards rushing between them. So watch out. RUSHING DEFENSE: The edge goes to Morehouse. They are only giving up an average of 141.8 yards per game on the ground, com pared to CAU’s 159.2. MH’s defensive line went six consecutive quarters without allowing a rushing touchdown earlier in the season. They also held the league’s leading rusher (Howard Rodman of Tuskegee) to 53 yards when they faced him. MH linebacker Carlton Moore is a two-time SIAC Defensive Player-of-the Week and has 92 tackles to date. PASSING DEFENSE: CAU: The Panther secondary has improved over last year with Terry Beckham and Kareem Bacon at the comers, and Jeffrey Borders at free safety. Wilson has intercepted three passes for the linebackers. The Panthers give up on the average 167.2 yards per-game. What the Panthers lack is a pass rush. Morehouse: Free safety Jason Bryant lead the Maroon Tigers with six interceptions. Morehouse also lacks a pass rush. EDGE: CAU KICKING: CAU: London Bolden has been struggling with his extra point attempts and his field goal tries. Bolden is also struggling on his punts, averaging 29.3 yards in the last two games. Morehouse: Placekicker Benjamin Blackburn has kicked 11 of 14 exta points and is 1 of 3 for field goal attempts. Punter Chad Pasley is also one of the league cellar dwellar punters, avering only 34.6 yards a punt. EDGE: Morehouse OVERALL: Both teams match up well on paper, but it is a case of who wants it most. Morehouse will wash away any hopes of a title with a loss, in contrast to CAU, a win would bring a glimmer of hope to win the title. For the Panthers to win, they must stop the run. Also, they must get off to a quick start to force Morehouse to pass the ball. Nuff said. A.G.'s Prediction: Clark Atlanta 18 Morehouse 14 PASSING DEFENSE: Morehouse definitely gets the edge . Their secondary is on a roll. They have picked off three passes in each of their last four games to bring their season total to 16. They also have a streak going. They have not allowed a passing touchdown in six quarters. MH’s defensive backs tend to let the receivers get their catches but they keep them out of the endzone. Free safety Jason Biyant is the main pick off artist. He has six interceptions this season and 77 tackles. KICKING: Morehouse gets the edge in place kicking and punting is a toss up. Neither team gives you a deep punt when you need one. Both punters are averaging less than 35 yards a punt. In place kicking, MH’s Benjamin Blackburn is on a roll. He was three of three on PAT’s and hit a 23 yard field goal in his last outing. On the season, he isl 1-14 on PATs and 1-3 on field goals. OVERALL: Morehouse looks to have the edge. Both teams are even offensively. CAU likes to pass and MH likes to run. Morehouse has the slight edge defensively which allow them to prevail as the victors. The Maroon Tigers will use their ball control strategy to keep CAU’s offense off the field. MH likes to control the ball about 35 minutes a game. G.Q.’s Prediction: Morehouse-35 Clark Atlanta- 26 CAU - Morehouse Battle The Road to the S.I.A.C. Championship By Gary Abernathy Guest Writer This is what dreams are made of. When training camp starts in early August, every team envisions them selves winning their conference crown and earning a post-season berth. For some teams their hopes fade fast and for others, dreams become realities. Two local backyard rivals have turned their dreams into reality and will be playing for the SIAC Champi onship this Saturday. Both of these Atlanta schools have gone from pre tenders to contenders. Neither one of them has had a winning season since the early eight ies (Morehouse 1984 and Clark At lanta 1978) and both have finished in the lower half of the nine team conference the past two seasons. This year, both teams have assured themselves of winning records and no lower than a third place finish in the conference standings. Morehouse comes into this game riding a six game winning streak after losing their first three and is currently ranked 17th in the nation (NCAA Division II). A win over CAU increases their chances of receiving an invite to the 16 team playoffs. On the other hand, Clark Atlanta has only lost three of their games against five wins plus a be and has been ranked in several black college polls this season. This game is going to boil down to continued on page 12
