PERSONALS
An almost
Undeniably me

Last summer I really un
derstood the meaning of
“near death. ” During those
three months, I also under
stood why some people call
love crazy or fatal.
It all started when I met
Tony* who captivated me
with his brown eyes and
beautiful smile.
I gave him my phone num
ber and waited by the phone
for the next five days hoping
and even praying he’d call.
Finally, on the sixth day he
did. My heart pounded when
I heard his voice. I was smil
ing so hard I thought my
face would break.
I asked for his number.
But, he told me he lived with
his grandmother and could
not give it out because too
many of his friends called
and disturbed her.
Eventually, he gave it to
me. When I called, a woman
answered. She sounded too
young to be his grandmother
and too old to be one of his
friends. I asked to speak to
Tony. Rudely, she told me
that he was not there. So, I
hung up. No sooner had I
put the phone down, than it
rang again.
Oh lord it was that woman
again, she had call return,
“You just called here for
Tony; don’t do it again,” she
added, before slamming
down the phone.
When I asked Tony about
the incident he told me the
woman was his crazy aunt.
1 believed him and contin
ued to call and got cursed
out, or told that Tony was in
the bed with his girlfriend.
What’s so funny is that the
only conclusion I came to
was that Tony’s aunt was
definitely crazy.
That was until the day
that it all fell apart. Tony
disclosed information that
revealed his "crazy aunt" as
his crazy ex-girlfriend, and
the mother of his child.
I was shocked, to say
the least. However, by this
time I actually liked him. He
told me that his relationship
with her was over. 1 believed
him- 1 was a fool.
One day I spent the day
with Tony. We had a won
derful time. I thought this
could be real, but it seems
fate had other plans.
We were listening to mu
sic when his ex-girlfriend de
cided to show up unexpect
edly.
Tony quickly turned down
the volume and told me to be
quiet. I wondered why he
couldn’t just go to the door
and tell her to leave.
Suddenly, a loud pound
ing began to rattle his apart
ment and I heard what
sounded like male voices
yelling Tony’s name. He
told me not to worrybecause
his ex-girlfriend no longer
had a key and thereforecuold
not enter.
The knocking and bang
ing grew increasingly louder
and . I was truly scared, But
nothing can describe the
shock and coldness that over
came me when the back door
opened, and that crazy girl
stood there staring at me.
I ran to the bathroom and
locked the door as fast as I
could.. 1 heard fussing and
what sounded like fighting.
I prayed to the dear Lord to
save my life. As I prayed,
someone was trying to force
their way into the door. I
struggled to keep it from
opening. Finally they gave
up, only to try again a few of
minutes later.
I heard someone say “go
get that butcher knife out of
the kitcken.” When I heard
those words, I decided I didn't
want to die with a butcher
knife stuck in my throat. So
I opened the door calmly and
came out. I was not pre
pared for the combat boot
that was rammed at my head
or what I saw.
Two crazy- looking women,
who looked like they broke
out of the penitentiary or
worse, the crazy house were
standing in the room. One
(who I later discovered was
the ex-girlfriend’s aunt) was
blocking the door and ea
gerly waving a knife in my
face. She looked like she
could enjoy harming or kill
ing me.
Tony was holding back
his ex-girlfriend as she tried
to throw any object at me.
She cursed me and accused
me of stealing her man. I
lied and told her that I didn’t
know anything about her
and wanted nothing to do
with Tony, "He loves you
and you can have him.," I
said, as I searched for an
escape route.
Slowly I inched toward the
window and I got close
enough to lift up the pane,
The woman in the door told
me that there were others
waiting outside. ForlOmin-
utes, I begged and pleaded
for release,
I ran out of the house to
find help, but nobody would
help me. Luckily this man

fatal attraction
let me into his house and
his wife told me to call the
police.
When the police arrived
they escorted me back to
Tony’s house to retrieve my
bag and purse.
When I walked in, I thought
I was on the set of The Brady
Bunch. I felt like an in
truder. Tony, his girlffriend,
and their child were stand
ing around the kitcken table
like all was well.
The police asked the girl
friend her side of the story.
She said all she knew was
that when she came home, I
was in her house with her
man. I waited for Tony to
speak up for me, do some
thing. He did nothing.
The police helped me
gather my things. My purse
was in a mess, the handle
was broken, and twenty dol
lars was missing. The girl
friend only returned it be
cause the police convinced
her it would be best.
Tony came running out of
the house saying how sorry
he was. I completely ignored
him. I got in the back of the
police vechicle and slammed
the door.
They dropped me off at the
nearest bus stop. On the
After I was dropped off I
found the nearest pay phone
and called my best friend
and I cried for eternity it
seemed. She was as com
forting as a best friend can
be.
On the bus I met this nice
middle-aged woman and I
found myself telling her what
happened.
She listened veiy patiently,
handed me tissue and never
interupted. She told me that
things happen for a reason.
"Fate and God were on my side
that day,” she said.
As I got off the bus the woman
gave me'her number and told*;
me to call her. I never did. She
was my comforter, and that
was all I needed that day.
