F or the first time in seven years,
a non-greek, 28 year-old stu
dent who before the election
was not considered a favorite won the
Miss Clark Atlanta University title
against nine other competitors.
Charlene Curry, a Miami native
was declared the campus queen on
Thursday, April 22. Some students
said that her victory was shocking
because the title was not given on the
basis of popularity rather than talent.
Lynette J ohnson and Kasey Phillips
won first and second attendants re
spectively.
Miss Curry’s performed an original
monologue entitled "White Girl, Why
Do You Want To Be Like Me,” that one
student described as being “excel
lent.”
As a result of the pageant, Miss
Curiy said that many students said
they are hopeful ofher winning the Miss
African American Collegiate Pageant in
Orlando next summer.
"She not only acts and writes her
own monologues, she sings as well,"
said Parrish Williams, a senior engi
neering major. He also said Miss Curry
would be a good candidate for
winning the Miaa Collegiate title.
" I could not have done it without
student body support,” said Miss Curry.
According to Williams, Miss Curry
was heavily supported by undergradu
ate and graduate students. He said that
It is a nice change to have a queen that
is not popular and greek but pos
sesses grades, beauty and talent.
“ I think that she is going to be a
great representative of CAU because
she is totally different from the queens
students are accustom to having.”
said Kamali Williams, a senior major
ing in Public Relations.
Although Alarlc Evans supported
another candidate, he said that he
does belive that Miss Curry is ca
pable. "Age and greek status doesn't
have an impact on her performance
as queen. I respect her wisdom and
only wait to see what she does before
critlzing
One of the projects she plans to
promote is a parent-student dormi
tory, similar to the campus football
annex. According to Miss Curry, the
purpose of this facility is to maintain
the family bond.
She also said that she wants to pro
mote a massive clean up project in E.L.
Simon Courts in order to renovate the
exterior, allowing the administration to
maintain the Interior of the dormi
tory.
“Problems exist at every university
and it is up to the student body to
present solutions. A student body
that works together is power and
stays together," Miss Curry said. She
also said that the effort would reaf
firm pride and unity amongst stu
dents.
In addition, Curry said she plans
to be a politically active queen and an
advocate for the student body. “If I
can Instill unity and motivate some
one to take pride in CAU then I have
accomplished something.”
