Webb Urges Breast Cancer Awareness By Jenel Williams Staff Writer By the time you finish reading this article, a woman will be diagnosed with breast cancer. In the time it takes to read this paper, a woman will die of breast cancer. According to supermodel Veronica Webb, spokeswoman for the National Breast Cancer Coalition, the statistics are alarm ing. Webb visited Atlanta as part of a national tour spon sored by Revlon and the coalition. She is gathering signatures for a petition to be presented to Presi dent Clinton. The petition asks that breast cancer be recognized as a national health priority. The model/actress who appeared in Jungle Fever and Malcolm X said, ‘This should be an important issue to every woman. The only other statistics rivaling these are for AIDS.” Webb said, “One in eight of all American women get it. Over 12 million die of it. 38% of African American women with the disease will not live more than five years. There is no other moral choice, but to get involved.” She urged the women of Clark Atlanta University to in volve themselves in the fight. “Please find a petition or call 1 (800)934-0434 to add your name to the petition. Take two minutes out of your life,” she asked, “that will save the life of your mom, or your sister, or your daughter. It’s not a lot to ask.” Webb said some women are at a greater risk than others. “I believe there is a large segment of the population which is at particu lar risk,” she said,“the under-served and under-insured. It is my hope that through my work with Revlon on behalf of this campaign, we will generate in creased awareness among these groups and eventually bring high quality breast cancer screening, diagnosis and care to every woman” By making breast can cer a national health priority Webb said she believes women will be made more aware of how to detect the disease and a strategy will be developed to fight it. Ask yourself, she said, “When was the last time I gave myself a breast exam? By the time most women detect a lump in their breast it has been there for eight to 10 years,” she said. Webb said there is no definite way of preventing any cancer from occurring, but by increasing awareness through the petition campaign women will learn ways to arrest it, catch it in time, and lives will be saved.
