Woman's Private Ordeal Leaves Her Scared
DEAR JASMINE
& JABERE:
My life has been in
shambles for the last two
years. During my senior
year in high school I was
date raped by a so-called
“friend.” He took advan
tage of me during a very
vulnerable time in my life.
Since then, I have under
gone extensive therapy;
but, I just can’t seem to
get on with my life. It
took me a year and a half
before I could actually
look another man in the
eye widiout sobbing un
controllably.
I feel very fortunate to
have a very dedicated and
caring boyfriend who has
stood by my side during
this whole ordeal. He
even changed his plans to
go to another college out
of state just to stay by my
side. However, I'm
ashamed to say that de
spite his constant support
and attention, I am unable
to display any type of af
fection toward him. If he
even touches my hand, my
whole body trembles. This
situation has proven to be
very frustrating for both of
us.
What can I do to make this
situation a little easier? I
love this man and I don’t
want to continue hurting him.
Sincerely,
Shaken
DEAR SHAKEN:
First we must commend
you for being such a strong
woman. We respect your
courage during this difficult
experience. However, it is
clear that you are taking
the fear and frustration
you feel against your at
tacker out on your boy
friend, or all men for that
matter. This is a normal
reaction to such a trau
matic experience. Be
proud that you have taken
an aggressive appproach
in your own healing pro
cess; but, also realize that
the road to healing is a
long and toiling one.
Don’t rush it, take your
time and slowly your life
will come back together.
Talk to your boyfriend
and tell him why you don't
react to his affections.
Explain to him that you
love him but you need
more time before you can
become more attentive to
him and if this guy is as
great as you described,
he’ll understand!

Along with the ghost of Christmas past
my thoughts are included in the haunting of souls:
My words sneak in your mind causing fear and
suspense.
In depth, I welcome the affect of my words forcing the
simple to think beyond thinking ........
Transforming a monomer into a polymer while
questioning its relevance
Forgiving but certainly not forgetting
The unnourished souls of the meek wanting to be fed

Giving up the right knowledge to free the oppressed.
Ending the unwanted search of the seeker.
Stop playing the guessing game.
The answer’s right under your brain.
I speak to you.
I write you.
Not as a person ...
Not as a saviour....
But as a Poet.
-Natasha E. Corbett
So many times in our lives
we are scared to do certain
things and to go certain
places. One thing that stu
dents at CAU have learned
to do, is to put our fears
behind us and strive toward
a bigger and better future.
As 1 walk our beautiful cam
pus, I see tomorrow's doc
tors, lawyers, entrepreneurs
and politicians.
So many of us have come
from diverse backrounds-
some underpriveledged, oth
ers off-spring of wealthy
parents.
Here at CAU, though, we
are all peers starting off on
the same fool, making no
one better than the other.
Many of our forefathers have
died to see this very thing
accomplished: their grand
children and great-grand
children studying together
till united through knowl
edge and heritage.
