Braves Make Changes; Prepare For New Season
By Krystal Hunter
Sports Assistant
It is that time of year when everybody
starts talking about America’s team, the
Atlanta Braves.
Many fans are anticipating a world
champion for the baseball team this year.
As the Braves train in West Palm Beach,
Florida, one can not help but notice a
few changes from last year.
One of the biggest changes is the Braves'
move from the National League West to
the National League East.
Despite the change, the Braves will be
playing teams from their regular sched
ule. The new division will
not affect their schedule until the 1995
season
Another development in the organiza
tion is that Damon Berryhill, Otis Nixon,
Greg Olsen, and Ron Gant are no longer
with the the Braves organization.
Olsen was traded to the New York
Mets, while Otis Nixon and Damon
Berryhill were traded to the Boston Red
Sox.
Ron Gant was recently released on
waivers because his fratured tivia would
have left him off the field a good portion
of the year.
Players Terry Pendleton’s weight loss
and Deion Sander’s focus which could be
a sign of maturity as a player and a per
son a s well.
The tentative starting lineup for the
1994 Braves baseball season reads like a
manager’s dream.
In the infield, Fred McGriff will start at
first base, Mark Lemke will start second
base, Terry Pendleton will be at third
base.
Jeff Blauser will continue as shortstop,
while new comer Javier Lopez will take
Greg Olsen’s place at the catcher mound.
In the outfield, Dave Justice will be at
right field and Deion Sanders will be at
center field.
The coveted position of left field left
vacant by Ron Gant’s injury and depar
ture is being pursued by Chipper Jones,
Tony Tarasco, Ryan Klesko, and Dave
Gallagher.
The starting pitching staff includes the
pennant winning combination of Greg
Maddux, Tom Glavine, Steve Avery,
John Smoltz and Braves reliever turned
starter, Ken Mercker.
The relief staff includes Steve
Bedrosian, Mark Wholers, Gregg Olsen
(not to be confused with Greg Olsen who
has been traded), and Mike Stanton.
With two National League champi
onships and one National League West
championship within the last three years,
and most of the starters coming back
healthy and ready to play; it is no wonder
that many commentators are very opti
mistic about the Braves chances despite
their new division.
•.April 4, Atlanta Braves play San Diego
Padres at Jack Murphey stadium in San
Diego.
•Home opener, April 12 at Fulton County
Stadium against the San Francisco
Giants.
