Just A Thought...
Black History Month is supposed to be a
time allocated for the acknowledgement of the
significant contributions of blacks to society.
But instead of taking pride in this fact, many
people are focusing more on the holiday’s
placement in February, the shortest month of
the year. But is it all that important?
Carter G. Woodson, in his desire to institute
the study of negro history and enlighten black
people, organized Negro History Week. Negro
History Week was later renamed Black History
Month. The fact that it was initiated in
February of 1926 could have some bearing on
why it is celebrated in “the shortest month of
the year”.
In any case, this should not be allowed to
defeat the purpose of its existence. For all
those who have a problem with it being cele
brated in February, ask yourselves if that is
more important than the overall objective of
Black History Month. Black history should, in
truth, be an annual celebration but this month is
needed for additional emphasis.
