Track team

With track season coming around the
corner for the spring semester, Head Coach
Davg Edwards and his team are starting
practice early.
Even though Edwards is the Defensive
Coordinator of the Panther football team,
he never loses site of his runners. For his
distance runners, Edwards has
accommodated them with a few cross
country meets. “I call around for a couple
of meets,” Edwards said.
Since the runners are not an official
cross country team, the runners compete as
individuals or as a club team. “They are
endurance training for the (upcoming)
season,” Edwards said.
“We have beaten some other SI AC teams
and they got mad,” laughed Edwards, who
had to explain to the other teams that they
are just practicing.

Edwards is also excited about the
potential of the teams new recruits and
quality of his returning runners. New
recruits for the men include Juan Austin, a
native Atlantan, who specializes in
sprinting and the long jump and Charles
Breeding, who specializes in the 100,200
and 400 meter races.
With the women, the track team has
acquired Nicole Prad, a transfer student
who is a sprinter, long jumper and quarter
horse, and a native of Sparta, GA, Shonta
Alexander, who sprints and does relays.
“I have very high expectations of them,”
Edwards said.
Veterans who are returning to the team
are Kyrah Webb, who was an All-
American and a second away from
Nationals, Latifah Johnson, who was two
seconds away from Nationals and Roxanne
Singleton, who will be a contribution to
the relay teams. The men include
Wilkenson Nestor and Andre Crawford,
for victory
who Edwards expect to improve. Edwards
also has recruited a group of his football
players to run. “This is their off-season
training to build up their speed,” Edwards
said.
The team is currently practicing daily at
either 5:45 a.m. or 3:30 p.m. They are
practicing long-endurance running such
as 3-to-5 miles, 800’s and 1500’s.
Edwards said the team is building
endurance and are lifting weights to prepare
for the season.
Edwards said he has seen plenty of
improvements over his three years as head
coach. “We have a lot more depth,”
Edwards said.
He said his team can now compete in
more events because of the new recruits
and the runners who have come from other
teams. However, Edwards said, "We still
have a long ways to go.”
Panthers continued from Pll
With five players averaging in double
figures, experience and talent, the Panthers
hope to finish in the top two for the Eastern
division.
Witherspoon, Latimore and Nolley plan
to lead the Panthers to victory in their first
home opener against Clayton State
College, Nov. 21.
NCAA continued from PI 2
to be testing. If it does not occur these
students will not be able to pass.”
Haygood also asserts that the student is
responsible for their academic success or
failure. He said student athletes can excel
and thus perform well on the ACT and
SAT were they to start early preparation.
This also would entail the aid of college
recruiters in stressing the importance of
those tests, he added.
However, Haygood also agreed with
coach Hunter and others that the ACT and
SAT are bias toward blacks and that many
blacks do not test well on either test.
