Whaz up black folk? Well it’s 1993 and it could be a very interesting year. It
seems every where you turn black folk and white folk will be meeting head on.
From the Rodney King case in February, to the trial of the L.A. five the same
month, to the supposed boycott of baseball games by Jesse Jackson. I don’t think
the revolution is about to start yet, but I do see some trouble in the works. Get
your gas masks and weapons ready. So did ya’ll watch the bowl games? To all
you Florida boys, Texas A&M took a loss, but I told ya’U you was going to get
that — spanked! Even so, I don’t know what hurt worse, not being able to see
a Texas team beat Miami or seeing all those brothers playing for Alabama. I just
can’t seem to get out of my head that nasty picture of former Alabama Gov.
George Wallace standing at the front of the University saying that “niggras will
never be allowed to attend the University of Alabama.” They say things have
changed, but I would like to know what % of the student body that the black non
athletes make up.
Did ya’ll see that special about Coach Mac on ESPN? Can you believe that Mac
was getting national coverage, and it wasn’t on the bloopers reel? I feel really
cheated. I mean, all the publicity I have given the man over the years and not even
a mention of my name. Still, I would like to congratulate Coach on 400 wins.
This is a huge accomplishment at any level. The only thing I want to know is,
where was ESPN after his 400 loss? That was a big thing too!! I hope none of
ya’ll saw win 401 against Morris Brown. It was despicable! Any high school
in Atlanta can play with Morris Brown (1-10 record), and they take Morehouse
to overtime. Coach, I don’t know if you new, but you had a foul to give. You
also should have instructed somebody to cut the man off on the sideline. We won
anyway, but against a good team, no against a decent team if it’s close with 2:00
minutes to go in the game Morehouse has no chance! You figure it out.
Speaking of B-Ball, I saw Charles Barkley call himself “ a 90’s type of nigga”
on t. v. the other day. Right after he said it they showed a picture of his lily white
wife. Now I really like Charles as a player, but, what up wit dat? Is the "90’s type
of nigga" supposed to marry the blonde haired, blue eyed, you can call them what
you want? If so I guess I can’t be a "90’s type of nigga." I’ll leave that up to Sir
Charles, Barry Bonds, and some of you brothers around here (yea, big brother is
watching)!!!!! Well, I guess I better be Audi 5000!!!
Oh yea, one more thing!! FREE MIKE TYSON!! and to all the brothers and
sisters at Morris Brown, stay strong and black, and pick up a copy of Maya
Angelou’s Still I Risel!!!
Morehouse Rallies In Overtime
to Defeat Morris Brown, 92-82
By Kevin Donalson
Being 10 million dollars in debt had
the Morris Brown College campus in a
down mood. Nothing could have
brightened the day of the much
confused and disappointed students
than to win against A.U.C. rival
Morehouse. The Morehouse College
Maroon Tigers were not having it, as
they beat the lesser talented Wolverines
92-82, in overtime.
You could tell from the beginning of
the game that the Wolverines were on
a mission because they did not play
like a team who had a 1-9 record. They
were led for most of the first half by
Yussef Shaw who had 1 lpts. On the
other side, the Maroon Tigers were
playing like a team who had lost 3 of its
last 4 games. The Maroon Tigers
seemed to be nervous in front of the
4,500 in attendance. If it were not for
the 10 pts. scored by guard David
Norwood the score would have been
worse than it was, 37-33.
The second half was a much different
ball game. The backcourt duo of
Norwood and Richard Winfrey took
over the game. Winfrey scored 15 in
the half and finished with 24. Norwood
added 13 to his first half totals and
ended with 25. Another big play guy
for the Maroon Tigers was freshman
Mustafa Davis. Davis, who did not
play the first semester because of an
injuried hand came in and played very
well; prompting some in the audience
to compare him to former Morehouse
star David Dada. Though he seemed
nervous at first, when he finally settled
down he picked up some very key
rebounds, threw down the only Maroon
Tiger dunk, and made the key block
shot of the game that should have won
the game for the Maroon Tigers.
As in the past, the Maroon Tigers
dominated the second half, but they
never could put away the Wolverines.
After seeing their lead disappear on
them, the Maroon Tigers took a 3-
point lead with 17 seconds to go in the
game on a lay-up by Winfrey. With a
foul to give all they had to do was foul,
but the Maroon Tigers let Javon Brown
dribble the length of the court and pull
up for a three-pointer with 1 second to
go. It was just another case of the
Maroon Tigers not being prepared at
the end of the game.
“This is my senior year, and
Morehouse is still playing down to it’s
opponents, said Howard
Westmoreland.
He was one of the many people in the
audience who still had on their mind
the loss to Morris Brown in the first
round of the SIAC Tournament last
year. With two All-Americans and
four All-SI AC picks the Maroon Tigers
were heavy favorites against a team
that they had beaten by 25 two weeks
earlier. They led most of the game, but
ended up losing on a last second shot.
“Mac has to go. Last year, and now
this”, yelled one student.
Things were different this time. In
overtime the pressure got to Morris
Brown. Even though they took an
early lead, they struggled and ended
up loosing by 10 points. They ended
up only scoring 4 points in overtime.
They were led by Shaw (20pts, 5 rbs.),
Carlos Davis (14pts.), and Brown (12
pts.). Besides Norwoods and Winfreys
25 and 24 pts. respectfully, Morehouse
got 15 pts. and 13 rbs. from Sarran
Marshall.
The Morehouse College Maroon
Tigers are at a very important point in
their season. Either they will pick it up
a notch or they will fold. With the
addition of Davis to the front line things
could start to look better. Now it is
time for Richard Winfrey, who in the
first half looked as if he still thought
Larry Lewis and Harold Ellis on the
wings, to take over and show why he is
one of Morehouses all-time great’s!!!
