Maynard Jackson to Address The Class of 1997

As the Class of 1997 dons
its caps and gowns and joins
the growing realm of
Morehouse Men, the College
can take pride in dispersing a
gifted group of leaders
throughout the
professional world.
But should this class
ever need an example
of sterling leadership,
it should look no
further than Sunday's
commencement
speaker, Maynard
Holbrook Jackson.
Jackson once sat where
this class now sits, listening to
his commencement address as
an 18-year old Phi Beta Kappa
member of the Class of '56.
He entered Morehouse as a
Ford Foundation Early
Admissions Scholar in '56,
worked his way through
college as a waiter, tobacco
picker, librarian and
encyclopedia national sales
trainer before earning his
bachelor's degree in political
science and history.
Jackson's consummate
leadership skills shined when
they were needed most. As
mayor of Atlanta from 1974 to
1982 and from 1990 to 1994,
Jackson spearheaded a
citywide economic
turnaround by stimulating
unparalleled construction and
economic development while
protecting fiscal stability.
Atlanta's Hartsfield
International Airport,
completed during his term,
stands as testimony to that
productivity.
Jackson's most celebrated
achievement may have been
leading the world to Atlanta
for the 1996 Summer Olympic
Games. For the key role he

played in bringing the games
to Atlanta, he was named
Attache for the United States
of America in the Games and
was commended by H. E. Juan
Antonio Samaranch, President
of the International Olympic
Committee.
After completing his third
term in 1994, Jackson returned
to private industry and is now
Chairman and CEO of Jackson
Securities, Inc. This company
specializes in underwriting tax
exempt and taxable municipal
bond issues. Its affiliate,
Jackson Asset Management,
Inc., offers investment
advisory services.
Today Maynard Jackson is
returning to the college that
molded him to address its
latest group of graduates. As
these graduates end one phase
of their journey and embark on
another, they are guaranteed
some wise words from a
Morehouse Man who not only
completed that journey, but
redefined it.
