On The Complete Bitches
Brew Sessions, Miles
Davis is reborn... tenfold.
By Jonathan Howard
A&E Editor
There was a time when our
musical heroes were frightening
reclusive geniuses who cared
not for normality or mainstream
so much as the incessant pull of
the muse. Regardless of where
their spirit took them, they went
and demanded that the
populous follow, or live the rest
of their lives in a drab past, blind
to the way of tomorrow.
Miles Davis was one of
those geniuses, falling into a
Howard Hughes-like state in
the mid-70'3, but not until
unleashing upon the world
what would be a cornerstone in
music history. Miles had been
talking of change, big change.
Fusion, it was to be called,
and it strove to break down the
walls between the blues, rock
and Miles' given area, jazz.
There were smoke-filled talks
with Hendrix, Santana. A
change was coming. And in
1970, Miles Davis introduced
the world to his vision, Bitches
Brew.
While critics and the public
were divided on how to handle
this odd creation, it would go on
to be one of the most influential
albums of all time, catapulting
Miles from genius to icon to ...
Miles - a category unto itself.
Now, nearly thitry years
later, the complete recordings of
the months long sessions in 1969
and 1970 have been re-released
in The Complete Bitches Brew
Sessions, including music
unheard until now.
Whether drifting through
the "Spanish Key" or rolling
along with the electric guitar of
"John McLaughlin," Miles takes
us back to where we have yet to
go. Check out "Miles Runs the
Voodoo Down" or the eclectic
"Feio" and dare yourself to
listen to what will be.
As an artist and legend,
Miles Davis' like will not be
found anytime soon, but let's
pray that someone will come
along and take us as far into the
future as he did.
