Dr. Massey Dean Ahm Darden
Dean Eddie Gaffney Dean Sterling Hudson
#1.
Your Department Chair.
Duties:
Dr. Melvin Rahming, chair of the
English department, spoke about some of the
responsibilities that come with his position:
“The main role is to give students a sense
of importance, a feeling that they have chosen a
major of some value, and ensure that they have
access to departmental facilities and resources.” Dr.
Rahming confirmed that though instructors should
be consulted first regarding class matters, students
are welcome to approach the chair if they believe
an instructor has abused, insulted, or otherwise
mistreated them or if there is a communication
problem between teacher and student.
#2.
Your Academic Advisor
Duties:
Academic advisers serve one major
purpose: providing guidance to students in
selecting courses for a given semester. Students
require 50+ core curriculum hours and, in many
cases, more that 40 credit hours of courses
completed in a major department, and although the
average graduating senior completes 120 hours
during his matriculation, much strategizing is
necessary to ensure that both the major and core
sequences are finished. Advisers are trained
members of faculty, hand-selected by the depart
ment chair, who follow a student’s progress and
ensure that it corresponds with their classification.
In years past, a student was not allowed to register
until the academic adviser had seen and approved
his schedule and issued apin number; with
Tigemet’s open registration system, however, the
onus is on the student to look out for his own
academic well-being.

Office of the
President:
Dr. Walter E. Massey
Location: Gloster 302
Hours: ** Until Dr. Massey’s hours are finalized
for this semester, students may make an appoint
ment with his office staff.
Duties:
Dr. Massey emphasized the need for students to
first address their concern to “staff in departments
that can best serve them... because they are most
familiar with [their] needs.” However, he added, “I
enjoy talking with students and I hold regularly
scheduled student hours so they can visit my office
to discuss any concerns they may have - or just
introduce themselves and talk with me about their
educational interests and goals.”
#5 (tie). Office of Records
and Admissions:
Dean Sterling Hudson
Location: Gloster 106
Hours: by appointment; first come-first serve
during high-traffic times, [ext 2748]
Duties:
Because the beginning of the school year means
hectic times for the Office of Admissions, Dean
Hudson himself could not be reached for comment.
Assistant Dean of Admissions and Recruitment,
Danny Bellinger, however, explained that Dean
Hudson handles matters concerning institutional
scholarships and sits on the Scholarship committee.
On leaving the office, I encountered a 19-year-old
sophomore named Hollis ‘Treie” Mason. Because
of liver and heart problems, Mason was hospital
ized for 6-7 weeks. To his dismay, he found that he
received failing grades in all classes. “Dean
Hudson made me go through the procedure to
make sure I had proper medical withdrawal from
the classes, and they changed the F’s to W’s.”
Hudson also worked to restore Mason’s NASA
scholarship, which had been revoked. “If he can
help you and it’s within his power, he’ll do it.”

should be addressed to his office include those that
related academic standing: academic probation and

his office include grade disputes and changes,

Duties:
As freshman class dean, Dean Darden is respon

and facilitating Freshman Orientation throughout
the year (and resolving matters concerning

who have not declared a major. He says that his
workdays, however, mn much longer than the
official nine-to-five. “This is my life, 12-13 hours a
day. They have a bed for me in Kilgore for when I
work late, but most times I don’t even make it
there. I sleep right in this office chair. There’s a lady
in Fulton County Jail who knows me by name, and
she might call me at three, four in the morning
saying that they have some of my students down
there. And I go get them out.” Dean Darden
laments that his health and family life have suffered
