MOREHOUSE ATHLETIC
DEPARTMENT
The August 30 football
game against Fort Valley State
University will mark the dawn of a
new era in athletics at Morehouse
College. For the first time in school
history, a football game will be
played under the lights at B.T.
Harvey Stadium.
Erected during the summer,
four towers of bright lights will
illuminate the playing field and bring
the look and feel of daylight to the
Maroon Tigers home field for three
scheduled night games. The lights
are the first ever at the 9,000-seat
stadium built in 1983 and named for
the legendary Burwell Towns
Harvey, the most successful athletics
coach in Morehouse history.
The 2003 season will be
a pivotal campaign for the Maroon
Tigers football program. Second-
year head coach Will Scissum now
has a year of recruiting under his belt
and will work to meld new recruits
with returning veterans to improve
on last year’s 6-5 record. Morehouse
finished 4-4 in the Southern
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
last year and is predicted to finish
fourth again this season.
Nearly 30 returning
lettermen reported to training camp
in the second week of August. In
addition to new players, the team has
a new receivers coach and offensive
coordinator, Wayne Dickens who
comes to the Morehouse football
program after spending seven years
at San Diego State University.
On offense, the Maroon
Tigers will be led by two sophomores
- quarterback Duwuan Burton and
running back John David Washington.
Last season, Burton passed for 698
yards and five touchdowns after
taking over the starting job in the
middle of last season. Despite
suffering a broken collar bone and
missing the last three games of the
season, Washington gained 543 yards
and was named to the All-SIAC
second team. Because of his
impressive stats last year, Washington
was named to the pre-season All-
SIAC first team.
Bolstering the offense, the
Maroon Tigers returned nearly the
entire starting front line. Seniors
Kevin Coleman and Daniel Cramer,
who were voted to the pre-season All-
SIAC team, will provide experience
and leadership to an improved
offensive line. The team will miss the
services of Nate Zachery, who
graduated in May as the College’s all-
time leading rusher.
The biggest loss on defense
is that of linebacker John Grant, the
Maroon Tigers’ all-time leader in
tackles and one of the most
outstanding player’s in the College’s
history. Grant, everyone’s selection as
a black college All-America
candidate, was the SIAC Defensive
Player of the Year, in 2001, and was
awarded the Jake Gaither Trophy, the
black college equivalent of the
Heisman Trophy.
Even with the loss of Grant,
the Maroon Tigers will field a strong
linebacking corps. Returning starters
Lynn Freeman and Gerik Witt (pre
season All-SIAC) will join seniors
Robert Kilpatrick and Andre Warren,
both All-SIAC selections, on a unit
that should anchor the defense.
