5 THE MAROON TIGER
i
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28,2003
SPORTS
LETTER
FROM THE
EDITOR
In our attempt to encourage the
Morehouse College Community to
reconsider the political, social and
economic position of African
Americans before and since 1965
(and the Voting Rights Act signed
in that year), the Maroon Tiger staff
created,an “alternative history,” a
what-if-world embodied in eight
black-and-white newsprint pages.
The newspaper was entirely
done in black-and-white and was
shorter than normal to correspond
with the “alternative” financial
situation of the College. The special
fold was implemented to show our
respect for the staffs of the 1970’s
and how they folded special issues.
Also, you may have noticed that the
header looked “retro.” It too, was
borrowed from the 1970’s.
In publishing “the election
preview,” no offense was intended.
Sincerely,
Christian Nwachukwu, Jr.

Morehouse’s own rears baseball phenom
by Jason Wells
CONTRIBUTING WRITER
What does the top high school
baseball player in the country, who could
go in the top five in the next draft, have
to do with Morehouse? No, Patillo
didn’t pull off a miracle and turn our
fledgling baseball team into an instant
contender. No Dr. Massey hasn’t
convinced him to donate part of his
projected signing bonus to the Capital
Campaign. And no he won’t be
sacrificing his pro baseball career to
pursue a Morehouse degree.
Although you may have never seen
him on campus, Chris Nelson is already
one of our own. He grew up walking
the campus, taking in all that Morehouse
has to offer for a young man. He has
attended a number of Morehouse’s
summer programs, including the
National Youth Sports Program, the
Pipeline program, and even Crown
Forum.
However, there is an even deeper
connection between dear ole’
Morehouse and baseball’s next big
thing. Chris Nelson’s biggest fan is his
mother, an administrative assistant in the
Nabrit-Mapp-McBay building, who
regularly has the bulletin board filled
with newspaper clippings praising her
son, the Redan High School senior
shortstop/ pitcher.

Chris Nelson has been a baseball
player all his life. He’s been infatuated
with baseball since he played catch with
his dad in the backyard. Even his
hobbies are baseball-related, such as
playing baseball video games. This year
Chris was named MVP of the 2003
AFLAC Baseball High School All-
American Game. Being the most
valuable player on a team is nothing new
for him, as he’s been Redan High’s team
MVP since he was in eight grade, and
he has been the Atlanta Journal
Constitution Player of the Year.
Chris is being heavily recruited by
many of the top college baseball
programs, including University of
Georgia, University of Miami, and
Arizona State University. Despite all
of the hype Chris Nelson remains
grounded, and even though he’s been
raved about in USA Today and the
Atlanta Journal Constitution, he is still
excited about being in the Maroon Tiger.
Being the mom of a baseball
phenomenon has not changed Ms.
Nelson very much (except for
sacrificing the thousands of dollars a
year it costs attend Chris’ games, which
occur all over the country). She plans to
continue working at Morehouse no
matter how Chris’ professional career
turns out Too bad his career path doesn’t
seem destined to pass through
Morehouse.

Morehouse finishes in fast lane

The Morehouse football team
extended its winning streak to two
games after spoiling Lane College’s
Homecoming, 35-8. The Maroon
Tigers are now 3-5 (2-3 in the SIAC).
John David Washington rushed 21
times for 127 yards and four
touchdowns. Quarterback Dawuan
Burton threw 12-for-18 for a career-
best 223 yards and one touchdown,
caught in the fourth quarter by
Raymond Johnson.
Even with the balanced offense
that the Tigers exhibited last Saturday
in Jackson, TN, the success story of
this game was the Maroon Tiger
defense. Morehouse intercepted the
ball five times, while Robert Harris

and Andre Warren each had ten
tackles. Harris also had one of the five
interceptions, a forced fumble and
fumble recovery. Alphonso Dunston
had two sacks in his avid attempt to
stop the Lane offense.
The Tigers still have to master
basics. Five different offensive
players fumbled the ball, only to be
successfully bailed out by their alert
teammates. The offensive line also
allowed Burton to get sacked three
times.
It is now Morehouse’s job to
make sure that what they did to Lane
doesn’t happen to them as they host
archrival Clark Atlanta for their
Homecoming on November 1. The
Tigers are on the prowl and seem
ready and able to extend that winning
streak.
